  1. This ODT editorial is from last week but it's worth noting how strongly they come out against the coalition government's all-out war on clean vehicles and a cleaner environment.

Soon after taking office, National ditched the Clean Car Discount scheme, just as it was beginning to flip the fleet. Now they're killing the Clean Vehicle Standard to encourage the import of the dirtiest vehicles. They're willingly sacrificing NZ's environment, merely to line the pockets of a handful of vehicle importers.

As the ODT says, Luxon's government is "prioritising private interests over the nation's future."

  6. CW: Southland Hospital under serious pressure

When National embarked on their deliberate destruction of NZ's health service, they promised that no front-line jobs would be affected. Yeah, right.

    National lied.

Take Southland Hospital. After management pushed through a controversial 'night roster' despite knowing there weren't enough staff to fill the roles, several nurses left.

Both senior urologists left, killing prostate and bladder surgery coverage for Southland and Queenstown.

A whistleblower claims operating theatres have been temporarily shut down.

‘‘The few remaining theatre staff with any experience have burnt out and management are rapidly trying to replace them with junior and graduate nurses with no supervision.’’

National has extracted billions from NZ's health system and given it to Luxon and his fellow landlords. This is National's bright new future -- where only the wealthy will be healthy.

It's cruel and it's greedy, but hey... they're National's core values.

  8. The Luxon coalition has scored another win... NZ is the officially the "most deteriorated" in an international study assessing interference by the tobacco industry.

We were second in the world in 2023 but the coalition's screwed up policies have seen us drop to 53rd in the 2025 Global Tobacco Industry Interference Index.

Remember Casey Costello giving $200m to Philip Morris and letting them write our tobacco legislation? Slipping payments to big tobacco puts NZ in some hallowed company, along with Ecuador, Georgia, Madagascar, Türkiye and Uganda. The Luxon government proudly embraces corruption.

At least Labour finally manages to speak out about something and actually makes a promise to the electorate.

"Labour leader Chris Hipkins told the RNZ interview show 30 with Guyon Espiner that Labour would repeal the tobacco tax cuts."

From number two in the world to number 53: "The National Party -- going backwards is what we do best."

  9. $5b-plus blowout for eight Roads of National Significance - Newsroom

<<The total anticipated bill for the Government's 17 Roads of National Significance has swelled to an estimated $44 to $54 billion – a gargantuan figure more than 23 times the cost of the Dunedin Hospital rebuild.>>

  10. CW: NZPol - FamilyBoost - Nicola Willis screws up again

We have another classic from Nicola No Boats. She's credited as the "architect" of the Nats' FamilyBoost scheme intended to subsidise childcare for struggling families.

But the bulk of the funding is going to the better-off and poorer families are missing out. Trouble is, the scheme was never grounded in reality: an economic policy devised without using any actual figures. It's another Willis ballsup, as Amelia Wade explains in the Sunday Star Times.

"... a scheme built on guesswork, launched in haste, and propped up by numbers officials knew were shaky."

Does anybody still believe the myth that National are better economic managers?

  11. Waikato Med School scandal

The ODT has obtained documents under the Official Information Act which show that Treasury "expressed a litany of concerns about the Waikato proposal."

Despite the Waikato proposal making no financial sense, the Luxon government ignored official advice and bunged $82m towards National supporter Quigley's pet project.

Green MP Francisco Hernandez says "This is yet another example of the government disregarding and setting aside good decision-making processes to benefit special interests".

I have no inside information and I'm only speculating here, but does anyone else sense a possible quid pro quo from National for Quigley's 'assistance' in pushing Adrian Orr out of the Reserve Bank?

  14. Corned beef conundrum: Thefts see Pacific staple moved behind the counter

<<RNZ Pacific went out in to the Woolworths Māngere East and spoke to locals.

One woman said it shouldn't be behind the counter.

"We do that in Te Atatū, and I think it's everywhere else, because our people are helping themselves because it's so expensive."

One man said the shops had no choice but to resort to putting it behind the counter.>>

  20. Sure, it's only one poll and National's bound to pull centrist bribes out of their clown hat before the next election, but let's just savour this headline for a moment.

"Poll suggests National headed to one-term Government"

Treat yourself to a big breath in, then slowly release as you feel the anxiety leaving your body. Now let the chanting come naturally.

  21. The National Party really hate having to fund public health.

Addressing a shortage of mental health workers in Wanaka, National's Waitaki MP Miles Anderson proposes whipping a third of Dunedin's 300 workers and transferring them to Central Otago.

Just like that. In his tiny mind that would "solve" one problem.

Anderson also suggested "too much was being spent on the new Dunedin hospital project and some of that money should have been directed at the growing Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes districts."

The bigger issue is deliberate under-funding by the Luxon government and their ongoing transfer of public health funding to the private sector.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul is no way to run a health service.

  22. Once again, the Nats are defunding health services in the south.

A highly successful Dunedin-based needle-exchange programme which has been operating since 1988, has lost its contract. South Island funding for the service has been reduced from $1.4 million to $1m.

The Nats have killed a great community service to save a mere $400k. I hope NZ's landlords appreciate the sacrifice our poorer communities are making to fund their tax breaks.

  23. Simon Watts, National's Minister for Pretending Climate Change Isn't Important, deliberately lied to the media.

In a normal parliament he'd be censured and apologise. Under a cooker-led government overseen by Luxon there is no expectation of honesty from Ministers.

National's plan to discourage renewables and return NZ to the dirty days of oil and coal is in full swing. But the Luxon government's motto has been extended from "Burn baby burn" to "Lie baby lie."

  24. Intellectually-challenged West Coast Tasman MP Maureen Pugh has had an idea. She's proposed a "mini-version" of the government's fast-track system specifically for the West Coast, to speed up processing times for mining consents.

A National Party panacea for those times when the Luxon government's obscene fast-track legislation just isn't fast enough for your donors.

  25. The Dunedin Hospital rebuild is still in limbo.

The original arrangement included a shared-risk deal with the preferred contractor, CPB. Overruns would be shared between the company and the government, offering a good deal for taxpayers. This was the cheapest option.

In a spectacular display of mismanagement which has uncanny parallels with their screwing up the Cook Strait ferry project, National shut down the rebuild and demanded the project stick to a budget set seven years earlier. As if building costs somehow remained static over this time.

Meanwhile the hospital building site sits empty and the tradies have moved on to other work.

  28. CW: NZPol - another Nat shows his true colours

Another day and yet another Nat embarrasses his party. This time it's National's Southland MP Joseph Mooney who seems quite keen to re-litigate parts of the Treaty.

He's been widely criticised for his "limited understanding' of the Treaty. Unsurprisingly, Mooney is National's "spokesperson for Treaty Negotiations".

  30. At least National & their co-conspirators offer a viable alternative to the Greens' socialism, by bringing back oil drilling, removing pay from our poorest women, decimating our public health system, raising speed limits, borrowing billions from future New Zealanders to 'build moar roads', transferring wealth to the country's richest and least deserving pricks, while undermining democracy at every turn.

It's easy to see why Luxon's Losers are scared by Green policy. If the free medical and dental care the Greens are offering qualifies as Marxism, then bring it on.

  31. I missed this back in March. Southland Nat MP Joseph Mooney has introduced a private member's bill intended to shut down climate litigation.

This would protect big polluters and abolish people’s right to take legal action against companies which are damaging the climate.

"Mooney said he had received permission to lodge his bill from the National Party..."

This is heavy-handed, even for the Nats. It still has to be drawn from the biscuit tin, so there's a good chance it won't be introduced this session.

But it does provide a glimpse of National's future intentions.

  32. The downgrading of Dunedin's hospital continues. Yesterday it was ICU beds being cut by a third. Today we learn that Luxon's lot have reduced the planned 24 mental health beds for older people to just eight. That's half the existing capacity.

The greed underlying National's $14bn tax cuts requires sacrifices, but stealing hospital beds? That's low.

    #Dunedin #Hospital #NationalNotFitToGovern

  33. Health NZ under Simeon Brown is still playing fast & loose with the Dunedin Hospital rebuild.

While they've whacked 47 beds from the original plan, HNZ refuses to provide any detail about which departments the bed cuts will affect, or explain where the (up to $1bn) "savings" had mysteriously come from.

Luxon's broken promise to rebuild our hospital as originally planned is still being cloaked in lies.
