What #amber #fossils can tell us about the early evolution of animal groups. Authors Hong-Yu Li et al. (2023) discovered several new genera and new species of #Mantispoidea from mid-#Cretaceous #Kachin #amber (#Myanmar). The new finds come from the still existing taxa Berothidae, Rhachiberothidae, Dipteromantispidae and Mantispidae. In the mid-Cretaceous #Rhachiberothidae e.g. were much more abundant and thus such fundings offer more insights into early #evolutionaryscenarios.

At least 29 people, including children, have been killed in an artillery strike on a displaced persons camp in north-east #Myanmar, near the Chinese borderThe camp is in an area controlled by the #Kachin Independence Organisation, one of several ethnic insurgent groups which have been fighting for self-rule for many decades
All the victims were civilians, a KIO spokesman told the BBC
It is one the deadliest attacks in the 63 year-long conflict in Kachin State

The #Myanmar junta has lost entire swathes of #Burma territory.
The Burmese online newspaper #Irrawady details the practices of the junta: the military arbitrarily arrest civilians and then use them as human shields, particularly in #Kachin State. The purpose is to advance through the countryside, to protect regular soldiers from rebel fire and to avoid mines hidden in the ground.
