As randomly chosen by survey on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 361 on The List, submitted by zm1. (The survey choices given were “Head”, “Like”, “A”, and “Hole”; as the winning selection, “Like”, was the 2nd choice, the survey result was translated as picking the 2nd album in The List with “like” in the title.)

This is the debut album by the Stone siblings, and it’s really charming, chill folk rock, in a similar universe as José González and perhaps Damien Rice. As I’m writing this, a lovely breeze is blowing through the window, the blossoms from the neighborhood flowering trees are floating in the air outside, and my dog is passed out on the floor and dreaming, so this is really just the an absolutely fitting soundtrack for the moment. My favorite bits are Julia’s intriguing voice (reminds me of Joanna Newsom), the smattering of trumpet and piano (both played by Julia), and the chef’s kiss drumming. Perhaps worth noting is that there’s two (or three) different versions of this album, as an alternative North American version was released in 2009 with a couple of the songs replaced and a completely different track order (the Apple Music version also has an additional six songs).

Though the duo split after their next album to work on their solo careers for a couple years, Angus and Julia have continued to make albums together since their Rick Rubin-produced self-titled album in 2014. Their most recent release, Cape Forestier, just came out in February, so it’s a good time to catch up on the Stones’ discography.
