Now that I've watched the entire Journey To The West I can share the behind the scenes photage I stumbled upon a while ago. It's easy to see why Heng Dian World Studios have become so popular. And... is the horse complaining about Xuanzang driving a car?
(For some reason no sound - just a musical overlay)

CW: Spoiler Journey To The West
And my watch-through ends with this graduation photo of the three disciples. If I'd sum up the drama it'd be something like this
Tangzang: Greetings benefactor, I'm Tangzang from the great Tang, and here are...
*internal sigh*
...my three ugly and rude disciples
After that it's a dice roll whether the benefactor wants to eat Tangzang, marry him, or is a woman in need. But they do get the books. And enlightenment, somehow.

Character design analysis of Wujing, Bajie, and Wukong. Their basic shapes are rectangle, circle, and triangle, and it's fascinating to see how few details one have to add before they're recognisable.

The smocking on his sleeve is gorgeous! The costume designers of this show are really good, both in how they use shortcuts (a neccessity when you work as an artist) and when they chose to add some extra detail. It's easy to think a pattern like this is superfluous work, but it adds to the feel of the drama.

Again? What of 'monk' is so hard to understand?

According to Hanping Chinese Dictionary that huge character on Wukong's cap, 佛, means "buddhism"*. It feels a bit like L for Learner, or those trainee signs companies provide, to make sure people know those unruly newcomers actually belong. Yep, it took me 39 episodes to look it up, despite wondering over it from the start. Speed is _not_ my middle name.
(*as well as "seemingly" and "(female) head ornament")

Things have obviously improved behind the scenes in C-drama land between season 1 (1986) and season 2 (2000). I've already mentioned better vfx, but I haven't said much about the fight choreography. The fight scenes are easier to follow, and look better. There are slick wire works, and an array of vfx. Yet I admit that the coolest parts are when the actors (or stand-ins) are doing the cool stuff themselves by somersaulting, artfully wielding weapons etc.

I need to look up this actor when I'm through the drama! That's an exellent "I should know better, yet I've done fucked up" face.

CW: Food (Journey To The West 1986)
They are seriously discussing recipes for cooking Xuanzang! If I ever find a "Journey To The West Cookbook" I'd be afraid to open it!
It's not a bad idea, though! Sounds like a good way to present Chinese regional cooking to children and Westerners alike. I happily pass this onto any Chinese who'd enjoy writing it - and I suggest the byline "no monks were harmed during the writing of this book"

I don't know if all actors playing Xuanzang* can ride a horse, but this one definitely can! He sits as if being on a horse is the comfiest, easiest thing to do.
Reader, it's _not_ if you're a noob. The skinniest horse gets as wide as the Atlantic, if you're unlucky you dislocate a hip (hi!), and your butt gets smashed to smithereens. I can only congratulate Xuanzang for his... hm°... skill.
(*they're three, taking turns)

Much like Wukong doesn't let go of his tea cup when he's about to beat up monsters, Xuanzang doesn't let go of his book when he's sedated by them. Priorities, they are important!

I don't think I've seen a mug with an ear in a C-drama before! It's vaguely cottagecore, isn't it? To speculate I think it's part of the 'this place is far from Tang/China' package - the demons of the week are dressed in clothes inspired by Hui, Uygur, and other peoples in western China. And while the overall design leans towards cartoon stylisation things rarely shows up at random...
...hm
*adds another place to my dream China longtrip*

Once I'm through this drama this creature will be among the first I look up. Is it a dragon? Could be a dragon? The ~moustaches hints at it, but the rest of it doesn't look very dragon like. Anyway - this is one of the best uses of lion dancers I've seen!
Edit: apparently this is Water-averting Golden-eyed Beast
