Today is Jerry Rescue Day. On 1 October 1851 a fugitive slave named Jerry Henry was arrested in Syracuse, New York. A group of armed people took to the police station where he was being held and through overwhelming numbers returned him to freedom by force. A larger crowd outside helped his rescuers evade identification by the police.

While those who rescued Jerry were considered violent criminals by the state at the time, I believe that many of us today would consider them to be heroes who acted justly. I would hope that, since the project of abolition is far from over, we can continue to find the same bravery in our own time.

(Note that Wikipedia claims at one point that Jerry was the man's "slave name", but the source from which I learned about this claimed that it was his preferred name, his given name being William Henry, also the name of his slaveholder father.)
