Today is Jerry Rescue Day. On 1 October 1851 a fugitive slave named Jerry Henry was arrested in Syracuse, New York. A group of armed people took to the police station where he was being held and through overwhelming numbers returned him to freedom by force. A larger crowd outside helped his rescuers evade identification by the police.

While those who rescued Jerry were considered violent criminals by the state at the time, I believe that many of us today would consider them to be heroes who acted justly. I would hope that, since the project of abolition is far from over, we can continue to find the same bravery in our own time.

Afterwards I realized I had this photo, taken 35 years ago in the same room by someone standing in almost exactly the same spot as the person who took my picture Saturday.

This was a morris dancing workshop with Phil Underwood of Thames Valley Morris (in England) teaching Oddington dances.

Some of these people I haven't seen in years, some I still see regularly. One besides me was even in the same room on Saturday.

When I took this – or even ten years ago, for that matter – I could not have imagined that city newsstands would almost completely disappear someday. This is from November 1979, in downtown #SyracuseNY. His name was Pete Mussi, and he was a fixture there for decades. He's holding up the afternoon paper, because at the time a city the size of Syracuse could still support two newspapers.
