In spite of President #Jerí ’s high-profile announcements of ‘hard-hand’ policies to crack down on crime, it just keeps climbing – judging by Ministry of Interior figures published this week. Between January & October there were 222,730 cases of extortion, robbery, threats, murders and other crimes committed across the country. Der „Marsch der Generation Z” forderte „que se vayan todos” (alle sollen gehen). Bei den Protesten kam es zu Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Polizei und Demonstrierenden mit einem Toten sowie mehr als 100 Verletzten.

President José Jerí presented draft legislation on 20 November to Fernando Rospigliosi, the president of Congress, that would grant the executive legislative powers for two months on matters relating to criminality and citizen security. It is unlikely that Rospigliosi will wish to oppose the wishes of the man who, prior to Dina Boluarte’s impeachment, held the very same position as himself.

Generation-Z protestors launched a fresh anti-government protest in #Lima and elsewhere, lambasting the police in particular for their role in repressing previous demonstrations. A month earlier, on 15 October, a plain clothes policeman shot dead Eduardo Ruiz Sanz, a rapper known as ‘Trvko’. The protestors demand the repeal of legislation that many see as promoting criminal activity. The marches passed off largely peacefully.

Killings continue despite state of emergency #Peru
Despite of the 30-day state of emergency declared on 21 October by the #Jerí administration, the killings continue in #Lima and Callao with the police authorities apparently unable to stem the ongoing wave of violence. The problem of extortion by #mafia -like gangs carries on, with several people assassinated in the last few days. No less than 17 deaths were registered in the first nine days of the state of emergency.

Having been appointed by Congress to succeed impeached president Boluarte, it was hardly surprising that Congress would approve – by a significant majority of 79 to 15 – the new administration. Indigenous organisations reject new president #Indigene #Peru
In a joint communique, six national indigenous organisations have announced their decision to withhold support and deny the legitimacy of Peru’s new president, José #Jerí, appointed by Congress after the ousting of Dina #Boluarte. They insist that the public prosecutor and judiciary investigate and punish Boluarte over the accusations levelled against her.

A week after the unexpected impeachment of Dina #Boluarte and the designation of José #Jerí as president of #Peru, political stability appeared as far off as ever. Although Jerí’s appointment followed constitutional norms, his government appears to have gained scant legitimacy. While Jerí took five days to appoint a new cabinet, he has been the target of widespread protests in the streets of Lima and many other urban centres.

#Boluarte ousted after outliving her usefulness to Congress #Präsident
On the night of 9 October, the congressional long knives came out for Dina Boluarte, forcing her out of the presidency of #Peru. Following her near-unanimous impeachment, she joins the list of ex-presidents, most of whom are in jail. Her replacement, José #Jeri, since last July the president of Congress, was sworn as caretaker successor pending the outcome of next April’s general elections.
