  1. "Flowers in a Wan-Li Vase," Jan Brueghel the Elder, c. 1610-15.

Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625) was a member of the Brueghel family of artists, which produced some exceptional ones. He operated in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and was something of a pioneer in the floral painting genre, as few artists of the period had done them before him.

There's an interesting economic take on this that I'm seeing...the Chinese vase is an indicator of the Dutch trading prowess on one hand, but on the other...the tulips are prominently featured, and the Dutch tulip mania was just starting to come to life when he painted this, becoming history's first recorded speculative bubble and a byword for any market where the prices of something outstrip their intrinsic value.

    But hey, it's Flower Friday!

  2. "Bouquet of Flowers in a Blue Vase," Jan Brueghel the Elder, c. 1608.

My childhood home had a ton of irises blooming around it in spring, and I always love the sweet smell, which reminded me vaguely of Pixie Stix. Are those still made?

Brueghel (1568-1625) was a Flemish painter, the son of the great, great, great PIeter Brueghel the Elder. But Jan was no slouch in his own way; he was masterful when doing flowers; he was also respected for his ability to depict cloth in his works, and his invention of what became known as the "paradise landscape", that is to say, idyllic landscapes with varied animals living together harmoniously, depicting either a prelapsarian Eden or a heavenly view.

But back to this painting...the bouquet is lovely, but I think the work of fantasy; it's too big for the vase! And in the middle is a mourning iris, in black, blue, and gray, a flower rarely painted.
