Still thinking about that Stephen Hwang talk on Ok-k-mer.
Starting with a tree, it finds and applies optimal set of multiple kmers for pairwise genomic distance estimation. Could it be more accurate estimation via multiple kmers is due to difference among multiple genomic compartments?
Unfortunately, I can't find any GitHub or preprint about this presentation online :( Time to contact the author I guess.

Hmm the Erik Wright talk on building gene and species tree was fascinating. Essentially, based on benchmarks simple distance & ME trees seem to perform best when compared to the more computationally demanding ML and MP trees. He brings up a need to counter some existing dogma in phylogeny research. Something to think about - tree build computational burden is real for an independent lab like mine.

Wow places around #ismb2026 are crowded during lunch. If you want some quiet time, I recommend DuPont market and getting a hot Italian on ciabatta, sit outside on the terrace and get some summer breeze.

The Casey Dunn keynote was phenomenal. From real world hunt for Physalia diversity across the world based on 18th century archives and iNaturalist sightings to CAD, assembly technique and more.
The bit on common mathematical formalism utilized across many(most?) contemporary biology questions was 🤌
Apparently he has a new book too, freely available online.

I don't think conference organizers should be holding things in the US, but I have to say that if they live up to what they're promising here, it's better than a lot of societies in plant science/botany are doing for accessibility (this isn't the whole thing for accessibility, but it's helpful for many).

Huh, unexpected turnabout on day two - thought I would spend more time in metagenomics talk, but finding HIT-SEQ session a bit more interesting. Also looking forward to CRANE nanopore raw signal correction talk later in the day.
(I can only listen to so many classifier and ML talks in one sitting I guess)

I wonder that there seem to be so few #ISMB2026 posts on here, usually a massive #ComputationalBiology conference, despite a good #bioinformatics pool of posters here.
Is it a Mastodon European skew? And/or privacy/visa/travel fears attending the #ISMB conference in Washington under the second Trump administration? I personally wouldn’t willingly travel to the USA for now even if I had a travel budget to cover it 🤷♂️

Fellas, that Rob Patro talk on faster k-mer dictionary should be a textbook example on how to communicate a technical topic simply and efficiently at a conference.

It looks like I'll be sticking with the microbiome and HIT-Seq talks for the first two days, and then EvolCompBio for the rest of the conference. Heavy on microbial application with smattering of core theories- it was tough to skip some of the RNA talks though. #ismb2026
