  1. Been much more offline the last couple of weeks, no particular reason, except that my phone broke and this seems to have disrupted my internet surfing habits quite a bit. Interesting, to me at least.

Anyhow, I was at #ict4s in Bern today (ICT for Sustainability Conference). Learning so much interesting stuff! In a very welcoming and interdisciplinary atmosphere. Some highlights:
    - a recent assessment on the global ICT energy footprint (at least not as bad as it could be)
    - data center resource use reporting practices in the EU (let's say overblown confidentiality standards, no plausibility checks on self-reporting and no audits make it hard to study things)
    - an incredibly cool LCA study showing how e-ink shelf labels in supermarkets turned out to be more environmentally damaging than the paper ones they replaced
    - a PhD project framed as "the environmental costs of surveillance capitalism", where one part was comparing network transmission differences and impacts between Mastodon and X, calculating the impact of all the surveillance payload that is transmitted when you visit the Nazi bar

Also, the last session got us making collages and exploring a bunch of cool zines already created for the conference. Really nice end for the day and I got to glue some cute images on top of one of those silly AI generated images with all the translucent screens, which was somehow cathartic.

  2. Today Gaëlle Fret and Lucas Deloison will present our preliminary analysis of mobile app obsolescence on the App and Play Stores. We looked at the speed at which the 16000 most popular apps become incompatible with older mobile OS.

Also do not miss the presentations if you're at #ict4s

  3. Oh that's neat.
Our time spent reviewing often remains invisible (and it's a lot of time) so it's nice to feel noticed for it. :) #ICT4S #ICT4S2025

  4. Our collective #ICT4S zine is out!!!

    "Liminal Excavations"

A #zine that explores alternative visions, ideas and critiques on the topic of #sustainability and #ICT

    doi.org/10.21428/57a7f7a7.5d68

My contribution is "Internet of Squirrels" !

  5. Just listened to #LowCarbon Methods for Doing and Communicating #Research with Dr @Aepasek on the @solarpunkpresents #podcast:
    solarpunkpresents.com/season-f

I knew about the #ICT4S #Zine, but SolarProtocol.net, a solar-powered network of servers inspired by @lowtechmagazine that host a distributed web platform, was new to me. Now I want one!

  6. With #ICT4S taking place in just about a month, we are looking forward to your contributions and position statements. Areas of interest:
    - The global impact of semiconductor industry
    - Material and carbon impact of advanced semiconductor technologies
    - Interdisciplinary dialogue on techno-solutionism, particularly in the context of the Global South
    - How techno-solutionism and the semiconductor industry feed into each other

  7. Our #ICT4S workshop with the fancy title "The True Cost of ICT: From Materiality to Techno-Solutionism" is looking for inputs in the form of position statements and short presentations. The workshop will take place on 2024-06-24 in Stockholm, SE. More info: ict4s24-tcict.github.io/

  8. The #ICT for #Sustainability conference is calling for contributions to the #ICT4S #Zine 2024. This is a very cool alternative to traditional forms of academic publishing. Now to think of something before the March 8th deadline!🤔
