HP’s new Fortis laptops and Chromebooks are budget devices for the education market with MediaTek and Intel processor options
HP is refreshing its line of entry-level Chromebooks and Windows laptops for the education market with six new models including three new Chromebooks and one Windows laptop with Intel N150 and N250 processor options and two new Chromebooks with MediaTek Kompanio 520 processors.
The new HP Fortis G1m series models with MediaTek chips should be available later this month with prices starting at $249, while HP Fortis G1i series models with Intel chips are coming in January with prices to be announced closer to launch.
HP Fortis Flip G1i 14 inch ChromebookWhile these are all positioned as affordable, entry-level laptops it’s still disappointing to see that five of the six models have 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel displays. While the HP Fortis Flip G1i 14 inch Chromebook is available with up to a 1920 x 1080 pixel display, that’s only an option – entry level configurations will ship with HD screens rather than full HD.
On the other hand, it’s also nice to see that some semi-premium features are finding their way to budget devices. Half of HP’s new models are “flip” laptops with 360-degree hinges and support for use in laptop or tablet mode. And all of these are available with optional support for a USI pen that can be stored in a garage in the laptop when you’re not using it
HP Fortis Flip G1i 11 inch Notebook PCModels with Intel chips can also be configured with an optional 4G LTE Cat 6 modem. And while the lowest-cost versions of the Chromebooks will come with just 4GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage, higher-priced Intel configurations will come with up to 16GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS storage, while MediaTek models support up to 8GB of RAm and 64GB of eMMC storage.
