I wonder if KDE Connect/GSConnect will ever have the option of starting a phone from your PC?

thanks to #kdeconnect / #gsconnect and #unison I have a #syncthing like experience.
I only have to start the sync manually via terminal, which actually is ok.
Because my wife uses only her smartphone, I can sync weekly my digital heritage (all the important files in #cryptomator) to her phone.
This way she has all the stuff she needs in case a an accident or death.#linux or #foss is so great, because you find easy and family friendly solutions without the cloud

So I switched to #kdeconnect and #gsconnect for syncing stuff to my #android phone. Actually this quite nice with some minor hickups.
But ... the phone is mounted automatically to via ftp. You have to add /storage/emulated/0/Documents to the mount for modern androidos.
But then I can easy sync stuff if rsync, because I can access over the terminal via /run/user/1000/gvfs/sftp:host=IPADRESS,port=1739/storage/emulated/0/
Don't we just love #linux for this stuff....

It's an app for Android.
People on #gnome desktops can use the extension called #gsconnect instead.

Found a local file and clipboard transfer alternative to #KDEconnect called #localsend. its missing media control and remote mouse input but it doesn't appear to have the dependency bloat of kdeconnect or #gsconnect. I care about this because #XFCE is my preferred desktop environment its lightweight, fast, and the design language is more intuitive to me.

KDE connect on iOS with GSConnect on gnome are a godsend!
I do a lot of capturing on my good old iphone 12. Be it audio, video, images or pointclouds. The exchange to Linux is smooth <3 -

Could #KDEConnectSMS or its GNOME equivalent be made to work as a #libpurple plugin for #Pidgin? I do like how Pidgin allows me to have my Matrix, IRC, Whatsapp, and Telegram all together, and it would really ice the cake to have access to my text messages there too.

Another deeply frustrating experience with software.
My USB C cable is in the car, so rather than using it to connect my phone to my laptop and download my photos, I thought I'd give GSConnect a shot.
Three videos, two reboots, and two hours later, I seem no closer to getting it working than when I started.
So, so frustrating.

I'm totally awestruck about the level of continuity one can find using 2 simple tools - Scrcpy and KDE Connect.
Scrcpy seems to fit the idea of an "all-in-one" solution better, with shared clipboard access, screen and camera mirroring. KDE Connect appears more apt for multimedia and notification mirroring.
Does one really need to purchase expensive products from Apple and get locked up in that walled garden? FOSS solutions exist, and often provide almost every single feature a locked-down propreitary implementation would.
What I've come to wholeheartedly appreciate:
- bidirectionally shared clipboards
- bidirectional dev (mic, camera, files)
- notification and MPRIS support
- near-native performance
- (EDIT) browsing and replying to SMS messages
What I'd like to see (wishful thinking):
- ability to answer calls from computers over either utility
Combined with cloud-based services, continuity should almost equal the Apple ecosystem's performance.

Months of wondering why #KDEConnect only half worked on my gnome desktop has been ended by the fact that I had #GSConnect installed alongside it, so they conflict and always crashed when I tried to open the settings. Now I spent a whole 6 minutes to uninstall KDE Connect and set up GS Connect, which now works perfectly!

Voy a quitar #KDEConnect.

Installed #KDEConnect on my @e_mydata #Android phone with #GSConnect on my #Linux #GNOME desktop yesterday.
I have all my devices connected to my own VPN server the whole time, so it had to be set up manually (no automatic discovery). So I was very pleasantly surprised everything just connected by itself this morning. Notifications from the mobile appeared on my desktop like it should.
This is awesome! The KDE/GSConnect user experience has really improved since last time I tried it - which is 4-5 years ago. At that time, it was more cumbersome and unstable. Now It Just Works™
All I did:
- Install KDEConnect from F-Droid
- Installed the GSConnect GNOME Shell extension
- Opened up for cross-VPN client access on UDP+TCP port 1716 through 1764 in the VPN server's firewall
- Manually added the VPN IP address of the computer in the mobile client's KDEConnect app
To get GSConnect to work yesterday, I had to to run
systemctl --user reload dbus-broker.serviceafter installing the GNOME extension to get the required backend helper service running. This was only needed yesterday. Otherwise, I suspect logging out and in again would also work.https://kdeconnect.kde.org/

KdeConnect (on the phone) and GSConnect (on the computer) turn out to work extremely well when I'm using a computer for media playback plugged in to the TV across the room. It gives me a virtual keyboard and mouse to control the computer with, among other things.
This plus Jellyfin's remote control feature so I can drive Jellyfin in the web browser from the app on the phone make it all work nicely.

Playing with GSConnect today. It's come a long way since last time I used it. I like it a lot!

#PSA It seems the latest version of KDE connect for Android (1.33.0) broke connectivity with GSConnect. Workarounds on Android:
Installing past version from F-Droid (1.32.11) or installing Zorin Connect from the Play Store (current version 1.32.9).https://github.com/GSConnect/gnome-shell-extension-gsconnect/issues/1931
-
@pabloniusmonk @ZDNet @gnome and @kde, with their Wayland sessions, are improving constantly. #kdeconnect and #gsconnect offer reasonable mobile-to-desktop integration. Touchpad gestures are supported out-of-the-box. #Pipewire could improve a little - in the screensharing regard. Linux also hasn't seen powerful FOSS video editing applications, but Shotcut, Kdenlive etc exist.
-
Would it be (theoretically) possible to implement something like #GSConnect / #KDEConnect for #KaiOS?
-
@RadioAzureus there are other implementations like #GSConnect or #Valent that might have a lower footprint in non-KDE environments:

@[email protected] @[email protected] Not a KDE user, but I can confess that #GSConnect works perfectly on @gnome! With KDE Connect on my Android phone of course. 😉
P.S. Don't forget to open some ports on your PC:
sudo ufw allow 1714:1764/udp
sudo ufw allow 1714:1764/tcp
sudo ufw reload -
#TIL about #KDEConnect;
https://userbase.kde.org/KDEConnect
For those who prefer GNOME to KDE, GSConnect is an independent project which implements the KDE Connect protocol into GNOME and uses the same Android app.
Either could potentially be a replacement for @syncthing, which recently canned its ailing Android app. Although at first glance, it appears KDEConnect can do a *lot* more.
-
@Lehmanator @agx yep, I just installed #Valent on my phone and it connected successfully to the #GSConnect shell extension on my desktop! 🎉
Everything seems to work, including turning the phone into a mouse 😁 🐁
(Well, except remotely sending an #SMS through #Chatty, but maybe that's a bit too much to expect already...)

@zechy #kdeconnect jde i do #gnome pomocí #gsconnect
