Things that make me just sigh, episode 237: "Header only Libraries".
I mean, yeah, I'm all for keeping things tidy and small, and minimizing dependencies but, really, one source and one header file would be preferable to you putting all 1000 or 10000 or 100000 lines of code in a single header file.
Sometimes I think about the forces make this sort of thing appealing to people, but mostly I just feel bad about the state of the world.

Survived the last food shopping before crimbo lockdown.
Everyone in the supermarket miserable, stressed and showing no excitement about all the expensive foodstuffs they're buying.
As usual, I was already thoroughly fed up with it all two weeks ago and can't wait for things to get back to whatever passes for normal these days.
Why is this inflicted on us every year? Why do people play along? Advertising power? Pressure to conform?

I miss the days of web forums. >20 years ago I frequented a couple for my specific interests, communicated with others who shared that interest, some I still remember as being cool people I'll never met in the meat space.
While I like Mastodon more than other similarly laid out social media sites, I'm not a fan of the "dumpster approach" to communications. I like discussions categorized and sorted into their own board.
Just some old man grumbling.

Gah, why does it take so long to write a thing?
This was intended as a far longer and more comprehensive piece, but in the course of writing it (and debugging the build system it's documenting part of) I realised that I could improve the next thing I was trying to write about, so I found a more or less sane stopping point.
Expect more when I've ironed out the wrinkles in the next bit. Maybe.

- How do you call an annoyed python coder?
- grum.pyThat is what I am, as #PyCharm started to forget the test runner setting between sessions and resets the setting to "Autodetect". And if it was not annoying enough, it runs the tests with Unittest command even though Autodetect says, they are PyTest cases.
Either my installation is messed up pretty badly or I've just found another company that doesn't run enough regression tests. 😒

It's 2025. There is never a need to append "(Swagger)" every time you mention OpenAPI.
I'm judging you if you do. #grumbling

Grumbling. The Last Refuge of the Powerless
You all know the people I’m talking about. They are your family, neighbours, and friends. They are bloggers and YouTubers and TikTokers. They are anyone and everyone who feels disenfranchised.
Complaining. Image via baird-group.comThe older I get, the harder it gets to stay positive. I try really hard to be around uplifting people and to attend inspiring events, but no matter how hard I try I seem to come up against one or more negative people.
I could be walking in a beautiful forest and another hiker will be grumbling about politics. I could be driving through town and someone in the car will be complaining about the ugliness of a building under construction. I could be enjoying lunch in a local restaurant and another diner will find a fault in their meal that they just have to talk about.
Stop Complaining. Image via Alan Turkus at Flickr. One of my sisters lives in an assisted-living facility that has everything a person could ask for. A beautiful location, charming staff, friendly residents, lots of different community activities to participate in, and yet the residents often complain. They complain about the food, about noise, about individual staff members, and about many other personal grievances. When I wondered about this and asked my sister to avoid those people, she told me that would be hard to do because it is a characteristic of too many residents. It’s what they do.
This all has me wondering if it is age-related or if something else is going on here. Maybe it has to do with being assigned to powerless roles and circumstances that deny older people the opportunity to use their life’s skills. Older people were all once positively contributing to society. They were accomplished professionals, talented artists, respected leaders, valued team members, beloved neighbours, honoured scientists, or appreciated community members of some kind, but now no-one knows any of that. They are reduced to their role as seniors without influence.
Complaining. Image via Kevin Spencer at Flickr. We are all living longer, and we can all expect to be retired for more years than any previous generation. That means we have to make different financial plans than our parents did, and it also means that we have to rethink our roles in the world. We have to stop thinking of ourselves as teachers, or lawyers, or plumbers, or whatever it was we were in our working lives. We have to start reimagining our roles.
All those skills are not lost, but they could be repurposed and they should be. There are lots of retired people who have a lot to contribute as thinkers, planners, volunteers, and creatives in society. These are not powerless people. They are power-deprived. If more organizations could find ways to utilize all those skills, we might all hear less grumbling.

Today it is not that interesting which library to use in 2025. It is much more intriguing which library to use in 2015

One of the worst parts of grant based funding causing huge inefficiencies is that it keeps scientists busy with financial administration work: calculating personnel costs, projecting pay rises, applying for rebooking money from one account or one year to another... 💸 💰 None of us actually have training in this #academicChatter #grantFunding #grumbling

Why is the share icon on mobile apps an icon that isn't in any standard font sets? It makes it really difficult to include in text guides for helping non-techy people.
Also impossible to refer to it in a text post.
⋯ and ☰ are available in fonts but not the share icon.

People used to dance Conga lines in the 1940s and 1950s to tunes like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkwaWhOUpYk
...and it's derived from older traditional music from Cuba and ultimately Africa.
So why is it that when you try to find music for conga lines now, it is totally different 1980s pop tracks by Gloria Estefan or Black Lace? 🤔 They're not even suited to dancing in long lines, the Estefan version is way too fast, yet there are people trying to use Estefan's music for the older dance.
It's weird how revisionist pop culture can be, it's like the original music has been wiped from existence.
