The GRACE Follow-On satellite mission uses technology developed for @LISA to observe critical indicators of climate change through changes in the Earth's gravitational field.
The mission uses a laser interferometer with nanometer accuracy between two satellites in Earth orbit. Researchers at @mpi_grav are not only involved this mission, but also in future similar missions due to their expertise in the design of laser interferometers.

Die Satellitenmission GRACE Follow-On beobachtet mittels Technologie, die für @LISA entwickelt wurde, kritische Indikatoren des Klimawandels durch Veränderungen im Gravitationsfeld der Erde.
Die Mission setzt dazu ein Laserinterferometer mit Nanometer-Genauigkeit zwischen zwei Satelliten in einer Erdumlaufbahn ein. Forschende am @mpi_grav sind aufgrund ihrer Expertise nicht nur an dieser Mission, sondern auch am Design der Laser-Interferometer von zukünftigen ähnlichen Missionen beteiligt.

New profile picture: GRACE Follow-On is a tandem of two satellites orbiting the Earth 220 kilometers apart in the same orbit 490 kilometers above the ground. It measures the distance between the satellites using microwaves (blue) and a laser interferometer (red).
Because of their expertise, @mpi_grav researchers are involved in the design of the laser interferometer for this and similar future missions.

So would love to see a spacecraft similar to the twin GRACE-FO spacecraft that are mapping groundwater on Earth.A similar mission for mapping potential subsurface water on Mars in detail, who knows maybe there are still aquifiers deep down with secrets from a long distant wet past.
