As #ClimateChange bites in the Himalayas, Tarushi Aswani argues that politicians are putting construction above people.
Rising temperatures and reduced snowfall are accelerating #GlacialMelt and destabilising landscapes - causing more landslides, glacial lake bursts and deaths - while large-scale development projects and regulatory bypasses make communities more vulnerable and threaten regional #water security.

10) In a devastating climate milestone, Svalbard lost 1% of its total glacial ice during a single record-shattering heatwave in 2024. The Norwegian archipelago is warming faster than nearly anywhere on Earth. Scientists warn these extreme melt events are accelerating, with alarming consequences for global sea levels and fragile Arctic ecosystems.

“rate of rise is getting faster and faster”
"In 2024, however, the increased rise in sea levels was largely driven by the thermal expansion of water" rather than just melting ice...

Are you concerned about #ClimateChange f.k.a. #GlobalWarming? Possibly #RisingSeaLevels due to #GlacialMelt? Well, Tim Walters here does not have a LOT of power in this world, but he's donating his spare time to burning your world for jollies. All his art posts are AI.

#Alaska #glacier outburst floods #Juneau, damages more than 100 homes
The glacier flood from the #SuicideBasin swelled the #MendenhallRiver to record levels, causing destructive flooding in Juneau.
By Sheri Walsh, UPI
Published Aug 8, 2024 10:31 AM EDT
Aug. 8 (UPI) -- "A #MeltingGlacier, overflowing from heavy rains in Alaska, unleashed a torrent of water on Juneau where more than 100 homes were damaged in what is being called an 'unprecedented' glacial lake outburst flood.
"The glacier flood from the Suicide Basin swelled the Mendenhall River to record levels, causing destructive flooding in Juneau on Tuesday, nearly one year after the same river flooded on Aug. 7, 2023.
"Glacial lake outbursts occur when a basin fills with water from melting snow, ice and rain -- after Juneau's heavy rainfall in July -- which overtopped the glacier, 'like water overflowing out of a full bathtub,' the city of Juneau explained last week in a warning to residents to prepare for #flooding and evacuations.
"A U.S. Geological Survey camera captured the Suicide Basin glacial lake's gradual rise over the past month and rapid fall pictured Tuesday after the outburst sent water flooding into Juneau below."

Not just the #GulfOfMaine waters that are cooling all of a sudden...
Waters off Scotian Shelf are cooling, but scientists can't say for how long
Lower temperatures have scientists wondering if decade-long warming trend is over
Paul Withers · CBC News · Posted: May 08, 2024
"Since 2012, ocean temperatures off Nova Scotia at depth have been consistently warmer — by about two degrees above normal.
"For example, near-bottom warming anomalies were detected in the Cabot Strait between Cape Breton and Newfoundland, Misaine Bank off Cape Breton, Emerald Basin on the Eastern Shore and Lurcher Shoal, Georges Basin and Georges Bank off southern Nova Scotia.
"The large and abrupt warming was enough to constitute a regime shift, said Dave Hebert, an ocean climate scientist who has run the Maritimes survey twice annually for many years.
"Regime shift indicates a persistent change in the structure and function of the ocean ecosystem."

"Meltwater is hydro-fracking Greenland's ice sheet, destabilizing its internal structure" - Glaciologist Alan Hubbard, in the field for 35 years, writes a superb, readable summary of what's really happening in #Greenland and #Antarctica, and why it is far more frightening than what the #IPCC admits. Article also has excellent links.
...
"Current climate models lowball the risks - Along with other applied glaciologists, "structured expert judgment" and a few candid modelers, I contend that the current generation of ice sheet models used to inform the IPCC are not capturing the abrupt changes being observed in Greenland and Antarctica, or the risks that lie ahead."
...
"This is a tragedy in the making for the half a billion people who populate vulnerable coastal regions, since the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are effectively giant frozen freshwater reservoirs locking up in excess of 65 meters (over 200 feet) of equivalent global sea level rise. Since the 1990s their mass loss has been accelerating, becoming both the primary contributor to and the wild card in future sea level rise."
...
"...new research into the ice sheet's mechanics are challenging traditional thinking about what happens inside and under ice sheets, where observations are extremely challenging yet have stark implications. They suggest that Earth's remaining ice sheets in #Greenland and #Antarctica are far more vulnerable to #climate warming than models predict, and that the ice sheets may be destabilizing from inside."https://phys.org/news/2023-06-meltwater-hydro-fracking-greenland-ice-sheet.html

#GlacialMelt is Dispossessing #Nepal’s #Indigenous Communities
Shrinking glaciers are forcing residents to flee, leaving a scattering of ghost towns across the country’s unforgiving north.
By Tulsi Rauniyar, April 04, 2023
"The indigenous communities of the upper #Himalayas are known for their age-old lifestyle, which has adapted to one of the most hostile landscapes in the world. The people of Upper Mustang are some of the last guardians of the Tibetan spiritual identity, whose century-old cultural identity and practices have been weakened by mass out-migration."
The reason? #ClimateChange !
Lhamu Tsering, a former inhabitant of the region describes the situation: "More than a decade ago, when it snowed, it would come up to here. But now, it’s barely a few inches. The mountains barely have any snow on them. In the months of March and April, the melting of snow and the occurrence of rainfall would provide sufficient irrigation to the fields, enabling the sowing of various crops such as barley, wheat, peas, and potatoes. But with lower levels of snowfall, the sowing season has gone awry."

Earlier, higher, smaller: #ClimateChange alters glacial lake outburst floods (#GLOF)
Accelerated #GlacialMelt in recent decades has resulted in the most extreme glacial lake outbursts becoming smaller in terms of volume and peak discharge. However, in the high mountains of #Asia floods now occur about eleven weeks earlier in the year than in 1900, in the European #Alps ten weeks earlier and in northwestern North #America seven weeks earlier.
