Momentous events happened 32 years ago #OTD in the aftermath of the 1991 #Soviet #GKChP coup: two days after #Gorbachev 's return from his house arrest in #Foros in #Crimea , he resigned as the general secretary of the #Communist party, the #CPSU

In #Kyiv (back then Kiev) the Rada of #Ukraine adopted the #Independence Act and called for a referendum in support of it - the country is marking its main state holiday today

The next morning, 32 years ago OTD, the news of the three deaths has stunned #Moscow and galvanised people into action - crowds came to the White House, pushing for the victory of #democracy over old #Soviet reflexes. The #coup leaders backtracked. The #GKChP coup was over by the evening and the implosion of the #USSR was inevitable, with #Estonia's restitution of its independence (probably a day earlier tbh) and #Latvia declaring its sovereignty (to be continued).

32 years ago today #OTD , on the second day of the #1991 #Soviet #GKChP coup, after a day spent in fear (for crushing the very gentle first results of democratisation), witnessing the #tanks of the Tamanskaya or Kantemirovskaya divisions rolling into #Moscow from the south-west direction, i felt for the first time this day that the #coup leaders just might not get away with it...
