Lithuania remembers the anniversary of the January Events today. Soviet tanks rolled into Vilnius in 1991 and crushed peaceful protesters at the TV tower. I spoke to some of the victims' friends and relatives for this article a few years ago: while Gorbachev is remembered fondly in the West, the Baltics can't forget the violence.

A new catastrophe will soon befall humanity if US and others resume #NuclearTesting, which has caused 1000s of deaths
We must absolutely recreate a #MassMovement against #NuclearWeapons

40 Years of Reuters Pictures: 1985 - 1995
As Reuters Pictures marks its 40th anniversary, a look back at some of the most defining photos from its first decade.

Is #Trump an #American Mikhail #Gorbachev, mused a senior former #Chinese diplomat recently. He didn't mean in terms of principles, ethics or goodness but in terms of unmaking the Soviet Union

The Guardian view on #arms #control: essential to prevent the total #devastation of #nuclear #war | Editorial https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/dec/27/the-guardian-view-on-arms-control-essential-to-prevent-the-total-devastation-of-nuclear-war
Next November marks 40 years since the #US president Ronald #Reagan and the #Soviet leader Mikhail #Gorbachev declared that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought”. The statement was striking – not least because their militaries were pouring billions into preparing for an unwinnable conflict.

⬆️ @paraw >> in #Europe we know quite well that we do what the US say…
Irrefutable proof in #GeorgeWBush steamrolling #UN over #France's objections in 2nd #GulfWar just to avenge his dad #GeorgeHWBush.
@benroyce >> "big guy gets what he wants" or "we follow rules"
In #US, we swing like a pendulum — former is in vogue when #Republicans are in power, latter when #Democrats.
Even #Russia heeded #Reagan's call, "Mr #Gorbachev, tear down this wall" — That was a good thing in a different era.

@benroyce #Transdnistria didn't "break away" from Moldova in 1990 any more than #Donbas "broke away" from #Ukraine. #Russia, first as USSR under #Gorbachev, then as RF under #Yeltsin, invaded and waged hybrid war using paramilitaries and eventually regular army until they achieved their desired state of frozen conflict. Just as they did around the same to time in #Abkhazia and #SouthOssetia regions of #Georgia.

If #Gorbachev had maintained one form of censorship much maintained most of the new press freedom, the #USSR might still be around. #hate speech divided the union so badly it broke apart. Gorby had no way of realizing just how much hate can sell for in a free market. Had he said "anything goes but hate speech" the massive resentment of other areas would not have been able to be surfaced and there would be a much higher level of unity. The #sovietunion may well be still around but much more socially liberal but with all the same positives the union had. 72% of people in the union were in some form of black market trade so opening things up in a controlled manner like #Titoism might have worked out fairly well. But we will never know and instead most of the soviet union was strip mined by greedy #oligarchs for kopecks on the ruble giving creating a decade of trauma in the 90s that still haunts them today and makes them blindly loyal to #Putin who pulled them out of the worst of it. -

Budapest, 1986. Speaking of interesting times, the late 1980’s was certainly one such period. Here President Gorbachev is visiting downtown Budapest in a time of unprecedented change. He is accompanied by his wife, Raisa, who is having her hand held by János Kádár’s wife, Maria. Kádár, on the right, has time for a cigarette. Interpreters hover around the Gorbachev’s, but not the Kádárs whom speak Russian.

The Nobel Peace Prize 1990..."In 1989 the Berlin Wall fell, and the Cold War between East and West was brought to a halt. In 1990, the Nobel Committee gave President Gorbachev the main credit for this by awarding him the Peace Prize."...

@randahl Definition of Mad Tsar applies to every muscovite Tsar, including the soviet ones. It looks the same every time. #Grozny (plundered twice by "good russian" Tsar #Yeltsin, Afghanistan bombed to dust by democratic communist #Gorbachev, the whole Eastern Europe looked like this photo, after it was "liberated" by Stalin

#Gorbachev, a man whose grandfather was tortured by NKVD, allowed hundreds of millions of people to be free again. He removed the fear of nuclear war and made people hopeful for the future. This ended in Russia in 1999 with Putin, whose father was in NKVD, and who was in KGB (successor of NKVD) himself. The rebuilding of the Russian empire with terror, lies, and now constant nuclear threats towards neighbours started.

Another MP and dissident, Yaroslav Kendzor, explains why. He says that after the failure of the 1991 coup in #Moscow against #Gorbachev, many #Soviet republics decided to break away.
However, in almost every parliament, the communists had a majority, and #Ukraine was no exception.
Therefore, before voting for the Act of Independence of Ukraine, it was necessary to obtain the support of the Communists, who did not want the collapse of the USSR and the creation of other sovereign states.

Momentous events happened 32 years ago #OTD in the aftermath of the 1991 #Soviet #GKChP coup: two days after #Gorbachev 's return from his house arrest in #Foros in #Crimea , he resigned as the general secretary of the #Communist party, the #CPSU
In #Kyiv (back then Kiev) the Rada of #Ukraine adopted the #Independence Act and called for a referendum in support of it - the country is marking its main state holiday today

'Mr. #Muratov , 61, sits in an office featuring a photograph of Mikhail S. #Gorbachev , the leader now reviled by many Russians, who rejected Communism in favor of free speech, free enterprise and open borders.
In the photograph, Mr. Gorbachev, who died last year, holds an egg.“He was very careful with live things,” Mr. Muratov tells me. “He was a farmer. He valued life. Now, in our state, death is more important than life.”
