  1. The origins of the temple are hazy, but it's thought the hermitage began as a dōjō called Ōjō-in (往生院 'Temple of Rebirth'), built by Ryōnin (良忍 1073-1132) to help spread Yūzū Nembutsu (融通念仏宗).

Ryōnin's (良忍) disciple Ryōchin (良鎮 ?-1182) took over the hall, and it was during his time that the dancers Giō (祇王 1172-?) & Hotoke Gozen (仏御前 1160-1180) took the tonsure here (with Giō's sister Gijo 祇女 and mother Toji 刀自).

The temple is now named after Giō.

  2. 💔THE DANCER'S RETREAT🙏

Beneath the rear flank of Mt. Ogura in Sagano (小倉山/嵯峨野), two temples have tragic tales to tell of broken hearts: the small nunnery of Giō-ji (祇王寺) and its neighbour Takiguchi-dera (滝口寺), where a farewell poem was left on a rock in blood🩸

Kyōto has a myriad of moss gardens, but for me Giō-ji's is something special.
