  1. A stroll through Sagano's famous bamboo (short and sweet to make it look as if it was peaceful and empty😅).

  2. In 834 Ennin (円仁), head of Enryaku-ji (延暦寺), was constructing a new temple in Sagano (嵯峨野) dedicated to Amida.
Before work was completed on Kedai-ji (華台寺), Emperor Saga (嵯峨天皇 786-842) asked if Ennin would also enshrine an image of Buddha he had commissioned.

  3. Right up until the Edo period small Buddhist statues were erected in Adashino (化野) to act as both grave markers and as silent guardians to watch over the dead.

By the 20thC many of these statues were forgotten, half-buried, or lost in wild undergrowth.

  4. One of the loveliest features of the hut is a small box, 'tōku-bako' (投句箱), for posting your poems...keeping the original purpose of the thatched cottage alive.

  5. 🎋BRILLIANT BAMBOO🎍

The bamboo groves of Sagano (嵯峨野竹林の道) may be world famous, but there are many -equally gorgeous but far quieter- places to see bamboo forests in and around Kyōto.

Mukō (向日市), a short train ride from the city, has a whole park dedicated to bamboo!

  6. The rain goes by many names at this time of year...

🌧️Saikau (催花雨) = spring rain that hastens the blooming of flowers
    🌧️Kokū (穀雨 April 20ish) = "grain rain"
🌧️Zuiu (瑞雨) = rain that helps grain crops sprout
🌧️Kanu (甘雨) = rain that falls at the right time to moisten plants

  7. During Emperor Saga's time a terrible epidemic struck. Kūkai (空海) advised him to copy out the Heart Sutra, and sure enough the plague was ended. The original is displayed every 60 years (next in 2078).

In 876 Saga's daughter, Princess Masako, turned the palace into Daikaku-ji.

  8. In China the birthday of the bamboo 'tree' falls on the 13th day of 5th month, which is known as 'Bamboo Intoxication Day' (竹酔日).

Bamboo is said to be a tricky grass to transplant and so it was thought best to do it when the bamboo was drunk (celebrating its birthday).

  10. though the sound
    of the cascade
    long since has ceased
    we still hear the murmur
    of its name

    滝の音は
    絶えて久しく
    なりぬれど
    名こそ流れて
    なほ聞えけれ

Fujiwara-no-Kintō's (大納言公任 966-1041) poem (55 of the Hyakunin Isshu 百人一首) was inspired by the gardens.
