A reminder/suggestion for anybody gifting a gaming console to a kid (or anyone who does not wait well):
Before you wrap it, or at least 24 hours before they'll be opening it, carefully unbox it, plug it in, get it online, and let it download all its updates. If you got games for it, go ahead and install those and let them update too.
The extra effort allows the recipient to use their gift right away instead of waiting hours for it to download the updates before it will let them play.

It's the month of the birthday. Amongst the adults in our family, we have decided not to give presents for b'days, but rather favour the #GiftOfHeath to ourselves.
That means:
* Do that long overdue dentist check
* Visit the optician for an eye exam
* Do a mole map/skin check
* Do an annual GP check-up including cancer prevention
* Get a COVID booster vaccination
* ...Stay alive, stick around, be the best you can.

Sure, you've had horrible-smelling cosmetics and out-of-date chocs. But your bad presents aren't a patch on what's on display at The Museum of Bad Gifts, an installation in Toronto's Northern Contemporary Gallery. Rejected gifts are mounted on the wall like pieces of fine art, and range from a framed fragment of cat food packaging to an astroturf gingerbread man. Our personal favorite? The holidays (regardless of what you celebrate) draw near, and with their advent comes all of the gross capitalist advertising of consumerism for the sake of maintaining and strengthening relationships.
Probably not the best preamble for me to write on a post that is ostensibly about trying to promote a gift option for membership to our Patreon, but hey. The last few times I signed in as a creator, I was met with a little popup encouraging me to share this page (https://patreon.com/solarpunkpresents/gift) with others, in the spirit of the season.
I mean, it's a neat thing, to be able to gift someone membership to something they like (or might like), and want (or might want) to be part of, but either didn't know about it or couldn't afford to spend the cash. I just kinda wish it weren't part of the gigantic deluge of messaging that comes at this time of year with the imperative to CONSUME, with relationships as the justification.
I resent having my friends and loved ones and the corollary desire to see them happy to be used to manipulate me into participating in a seasonal spending frenzy. I also like ... think honestly that this is something people might like to know about, so I should make a little post about it?
If I were better at this, I'm sure I would have made some sort of snappy witticism about late capitalism with a promo attached. But I'm not. I like taking time to think through issues, though sometimes I do miss things. We're all, at the end of the day, only human.
