  1. The gerontocracy is real: The median senator is 64 years old, and 20 members of Congress are over 80. One legal scholar called it the “old-igarchy.” It seems the combination of President Donald… #mix #politics #gerontocracy

  4. #Gerontocracy is #ageism.

Upper age and term limits for public office save lives.

The schumers and pelosis MUST go. Clinging to power is toxic greed. The out of touch mummies, thriving off of decades of lobbyists' money, suppressing progressive trends, suffocating democracy, pushing for irrelevant obsessions, instead of addressing needs of voters.

All that MUST end. Upper age limits. Term limits. NOW.

  5. I am sure that all of the people who can't afford medical care (or can no longer afford #Obamacare because of Trump's tax cuts for the wealthy) are happy that Mitch McConnell is receiving excellent care.

  7. Noah Berlatsky on yet another #SamuelMoyn book that fails to understand how power works in an unequal society.

"Moyn’s failure to engage with race and disability, and his refusal to assign Republican blame, make Gerontocracy in America feel divorced from our current moment and needs. It is not a book that will age well."

    i just…

look: am 60 years old yet this composite photograph of McCartney, Jagger, Richards and Smith is still fucking weird.

Robert Smith, a baby baby boomer, is the baby in this picture.

the chokehold the WHITE silent generation and baby boomers have on YOUTH culture is absolutely surreal.

The Rolling Stones & Beatles were hip in an era that is long gone. they are now part of the #EpsteinClass #gerontocracy and we should stop pretending they aren’t social and cultural anachronisms.

  14. Once again, there is no telling whether President Trump is actually losing it, or whether he is simply doubling down on his serial narcissism and blatant disregard for the truth. Either way, his allies risk propping up a leader whose poor cognition will eventually be on full display to everyone's embarrassment ... just like his predecessor, Joe Biden.

    * being exceptional is not always good. Sometimes it’s really bad.

  18. One of the problems with #American pseudo-democracy is that it's a #gerontocracy - rule by the old. The average #Congresscritter is late-middle-age, and the average #Senator is dead. Young people are frustrated at their lack of voice.

#Canada isn't nearly as bad, but I fear it could trend in the same direction, so I've been thinking about solutions to the problem. I think I've got one that's better than the oft-floated fix of just imposing term limits on #elected office, because you'll probably still be first electing middle-aged people.

Instead, for each chamber, set a ceiling *average* age for members of that chamber. Maybe for the Canadian House of #Commons and the US House of #Representatives you want something like 40, while permitting the #Senate of each to be the "older, wiser house of sober second thought" by setting a number like 50.

Each day, the system automatically calculates the average age of members in that class, to account for birthdays etc. If birthday(s) suddenly push that average above the ceiling value, the oldest person in that class is automatically dismissed, leaving the position vacant to be filled by by-election / special election. Repeat until ceiling value achieved.

Here's the important bit: anyone turfed automatically this way does not receive a pension or other benefits; they're just gone. This gives them the incentive to resign before automatic expulsion; otherwise there's no reason for them to do so.

  20. If you replace old Chuck Schumer with young Chuck Schumer you still have a Chuck Schumer. It's not the age, it's the politics.

I can't think of a better outcome for corporate #democrats than us all getting swept away in the #gerontocracy hype.

  22. This unambiguously resounding defeat of the Geronto-Democrats, itself another earthquake in US elections, is just so encouraging. Clintonism is a loser.

We are so far off the map of politics that I grew up with that I have to admit I am not sure what it means long term. God knows the right will react, perhaps desperately overreact. Not certain that the establishment Democrats have the capacity to react at all. Could they be more irrelevant?

The world can see that the people of the United States simply are not willing to accept racist authoritarianism.
