  1. "The Fortune Teller," Georges de la Tour, 1630.

De La Tour (1593-1652) was a French painter of the Baroque period. He's known mostly for religious paintings with strong contrasts between light and dark; this is a bit different for him.

His reputation suffered after his death and he was largely forgotten for centuries until his work was rediscovered in the 20th century. This image in particular was only uncovered in the 1950s. We have a man consulting a fortune-teller, and is intent on the reading while those around him are robbing him blind. Some speculate that this is a scene from a play, but nobody knows which one.

Halloween was traditionally a time for fortune-telling games. Be careful if someone reads your palm!
