  1. Lou Donaldson, Midnight Creeper, 1968 on Blue Note

Donaldson joined here by Leo Morris (drums), George Benson (guitar), Lonnie Smith (organ) and Blue Mitchell (trumpet). Very groovy soul-jazz LP from late sixties Blue Note.

Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in Englewood Cliffs and produced by Francis Wolff.

My copy—via Amazon—is the Blue Note Tone Poet reissue from 2024, mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed at RTI.

  2. Next is what is one of my absolute favorite moments from what I’ve seen of “The Midnight Special”: Van Morrison performing “Moondance” with Carlos Santana, George Benson, Dr. John, Tom Scott, and Queen Etta James in 1977 (tinyurl.com/pntmdk2w)

  3. Alligator Bogaloo is an album by #jazz #saxophonist #LouDonaldson recorded for the #BlueNote label in 1967 and featuring Donaldson with #MelvinLastie, #LonnieSmith, #GeorgeBenson, and #LeoMorris (later to be better known as Idris Muhammad). The success of the title track surprised Donaldson: "[W]e made the date and we were three minutes short. I said we don't have no more material. And the guy said just play anything for three minutes so we can fill out the time. So I just made the riff.

  5. Here's a good, detailed review of Brad Mehldau's latest, and an informed overview of the history of jazz covers of Beatles tunes. (I disagree with dismissing George Benson's "The Other Side of Abbey Road," by the way--I think it's brilliant, and it's worth it just for the earthy Freddie Hubbard solo on "Come Together".)
