This strange green ball on an Oak seedling is a Spongy Oak Apple Gall. Gall Wasps are tiny wasps that plant their eggs on a particular plant, and that part of the plant then grows oddly. The larva hatch out and thrive in the gall, eventually leaving it to find a mate.

These attractive little Belonocnema gall wasps are all over the live oaks in Austin this month, mating and laying eggs into the newly emerging leaves.
