A1: Coming at #BikeNite once again the next morning from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (after a delicious evening on a patio with my partner kept me away last night). The biggest cycling update from the week is that the Fancy Women Bike Ride (#FWBRyeg) was last Sunday, and while our numbers were challenged by wildfire smoke, we sill had fun getting fancy and taking over the bike paths of the city!
-
Update: The decidedly unwelcome #smoke is SUPER harshing my vibe today (of COURSE the first year it's actually warm enough, Edmonton's #FancyWomenBikeRide gets #SmokedOut, grr), but as you all well know, I've got a #MaskArt mask for that (for the benefit of anyone who's ever wanted to see one of them on someone's face rather than just on the counter!).
See those of you this level of smoke doesn't mess with too badly!

I'm all set for Fancy Women Bike Ride tomorrow! I've talked my kid into coming, we've decorated their scooter and the bakfiets, we've picked out outfits, and even a couple of different mask options depending on air quality. #FWBRyeg

The route: we'll set off on the 102Ave bike lane and wend our way slowly through downtown, then cross the High Level bridge on the west side. After we climb the hill to the Garneau Lamp, we'll rest (It's all downhill after this). We'll head along Saskatchewan Drive to 106 St, and the fun Trolley Track. From there we'll ride through Old Strathcona towards the Bonnie Doon bridge, pass by Faculté St-Jean, and end the ride at Café Bicyclette. It's just over 8km. /3

This is a slow roll. The point is to have fun, and to be visible, to be seen, to remind the city that women want safe, pleasant, welcoming infrastructure so that we can engage with our urban space, and comfortably use our bicycles to run errands, attend the symphony or go out for dinner, go on a ride with kids or lovers, or just commute to school or work, year-round. We also want to show our neighbours that good bike infrastructure brings beautiful things to the neighbourhood. /2

Update: the #FancyWomenBikeRide #FWBRyeg is TOMORROW and this is the current forecast! Hot damn. It’s fancy dress time! 🥳🚴♀️ :brompton:
Sadly I’m a bit too chubby right now for the dress I’d ideally have wanted to wear. 😢 But I have an alternative that should be almost as awesome. See you all soon!

Hey #YEGbike women and non-binary people planning to participate in the #FancyWomenBikeRide in Edmonton this Sunday: this is the current Environment Canada forecast for the day-of! 🥳🥳🥳
It’s a lot of days yet and it could still go wrong, but wouldn’t that be sweeeeeet? I bet we’d see a whole lot more of the fancy dresses that the other cities get to wear.

For those thinking about what to wear: it’s hard to be “fancy” in a YEG fall, but in previous years I’ve worn 1) a pantsuit w/ a wild pattern and 2) a fancy jacket w/ black pants. If it’s warm enough I want to try a dress this year (I love the message it sends that we can cycle in ANY clothing), but if it’s not, I won’t push it.
Also: the pace is slow & there’s safety in numbers, so last year I rode without a helmet and felt much fancier (also plenty safe). May do that again.

Of course, if you DO happen to be a woman (trans women are women) in Edmonton, you are absolutely welcome to come with us this year! We started in 2021 with a modest crowd, but in 2022 we had over 100 fancy women riding at a human pace through the city, led by a crack team of organisers (not me, I’m just an attendee/admirer). I expect this year’s to be even bigger. Follow @FWBR_yeg right here in the Fediverse for the deets as the event gets closer! /3fin
