  1. Not sure it qualifies as #FlyingAntDay but we’ve had one lot of flying ants set off for the moon or wherever they go. The birds are having a lovely time.

  3. A lot of the bigger ants, some with wings but not quite ready to fly, traipsing around the garden now. Flying Ant Day must be imminent, although the sky is usually full of gulls when it happens.

  5. Another #FlyingAntDay, and this time, some of them actually have wings.

  7. It appears to be #FlyingAntDay here finally. Turns out when you’re in a wheelchair they fly right into your face/hair even more. So that’s fun.

  8. Here in SE England, we appear to be having a second #flyingantday
It is also sultry, and not in a good way :/

  9. #flyingAntDay doesn’t seem to have come to my back garden, but we do seem to have an awful lot of grasshoppers, which the blackbird and magpies are devouring with aplomb! 🦗🦗🦗🐦‍⬛

  11. Noticed loads of seagulls circling earlier.

"That's usually the sign of #FlyingAntDay but I haven't seen any," I told my wife.

"Seagulls' calendar is probably wrong," she replied.

No. Just spotted a sudden frenzy of ant activity along the path in the garden and now the flying ants are emerging. The seagulls knew.

  13. It's starting to look a lot like #FlyingAntDay - but none of the queens have any wings. I wonder if the weather came a bit too soon for them?

I do see a few winged males, though, so I'm sure they'll be crawling around in my hair soon enough.

  15. Flying ant day is upon us, get those windows closed! #FlyingAntDay

  16. A small consolation of extra time in Tucson is getting to see what the wild queens have been up to, 1.5 weeks after mating (+based on weather possibly more swarms have happened). Lots of digging!

  17. So, I keep two separate video channels going, one for academic purposes, one for entertainment purposes. And all I really want to say is, the ant videos are getting far less attention than the cat videos. Overall, that's okay, but I do think people are missing out if they don't take time to watch ants now and again. There are tiny dramas unfolding everywhere.

  18. Some of the coolest footage I got from the desert leafcutter mating swarm yesterday. Reposting because I can't seem to fix an issue with yesterday's post.

  19. It's Flying Ant Day here, so remember:

Don't tread on an ant; he's done nothing to you
And there might come a day when your entire ecosystem is destroyed because all the ants and insects are extinct

  23. @pete

Happy belated flying ant day from Milton Keynes.

I got ready to take a short walk only to find loads of ants swarming outside my front door. Ran back in and shook one flying ant off in my bathroom.

Put a bait station out, in case that helps but may have to wait for that walk.

    Ugh.

  25. Sitting in the garden, beers, music, and, oh yeah, watching the flying ants emerging from ours and all the neighbours' gardens. Ridiculous numbers. The birds are going to feast this evening.

  26. Just realised it's Flying Ant Day here. Looked up in the sky and saw the seagulls circling. Usually a good sign. Then a couple of sparrows landed on the tree near us, both with large ants in their beaks.
