Here is my new carpenter ant queen. Her colony has 11 workers and I’ve been sharing their progress since the day I found her. Her gaster is filled with nectar that her daughters have collected. They are using her like a water tank.

“we little ants are starving… it very sad please feed us more bugs”
(You can see the queen on the right in this photo. She has never had a distended gaster in all the five years that I’ve known her. She nonetheless lays a lot of eggs)

Ant update. The young carpenter colony has 10 workers and more on the way.
The pavement ant queen has *so many* eggs. Ma’am? That’s too many eggs. How did you make all of those without eating? #antqueen #tetramoriumimmigrans #camponotus
-
They have moved into the new home and sealed the door (but only after eating most of the food I offered) They choose the second most humid chamber of three options.
Last week there were four workers, now there are six! and more on the way.
You can track the growth of this colony from the day that I found this queen here: https://sauropods.win/tags/antqueen

The new colony has moved.
They left an egg behind so I decided to give it to my much larger (nearly 5 year old) Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony. I made a paper tool to gently move it. When they noticed the paper they seemed aggressive at first— but, then one ant gently picked up the egg to take it “back” to the nest.
One of this colony is now from a different queen and I will never know, her sisters will never know— even *she* will never know who she is!

I've hooked the queen and her now FOUR nantics to a new outworld with a better nesting option.
Her daughters are nervously exploring the new space until they get freaked out and run back to mom.
It's amazing to watch.

Her pupae have begun to hatch!

Queen ant update!
Her brood pile is the same size as her body almost. She has five larvae in silk pupae ready to grow up to be nanitics (in about two weeks)
She’s doing great living in the fountain pen drawer. #antqueen #ants #antkeeping #camponotus #nycants

I do love this subtle photo of a carpenter ant in the wood galleries. Insect photographers for some reasons don't make that many moody silhoutte photos, I should probably do more of these. #Ants #Insects #photography #Camponotus

It is unreasonable that any bug could be this cute! when I open the drawer she always carefully picks up her eggs. She’s holding the most mature larva and it’s silk cocoon in the first photo. I guess she’s ready to run and start over if needed. What an incredible mother.
If you look back through this thread you can see how far she's come!

Australian Camponotus sugar ants are a lot more variable than our North American species. Here's Camponotus suffusus, from Victoria. #Ants #Insects #Photography #Camponotus

Discerning a sense of size from macro photographs is hard. Camponotus intrepidus, for example, is one of Australia’s largest sugar ants at slightly under an inch long.
But did you see the little Pheidole ant at her heels?

Another gem from the archives that I'd missed on the first round through. Camponotus aeneopilosus, the golden-tailed sugar ant, carrying a pupa through the brood nest. Victoria, Australia, 2012.

If you were going to learn just one genus of ants, you'd want to do Camponotus, which includes the familiar carpenter ants of the northern hemisphere, but many others too.
Abundant on every continent, diverse, and ecologically important.

Im Apfelbaum wohnt eine #Camponotus Art und mindestens eine #Dolichoderus quadripunctatus Kolonie, die hierzulande wohl mittlerweile recht selten sind.

If you are starting to learn ants, this should be your first genus: Camponotus. They are found everywhere in the world, there are a lot of ecologically important species, and you'll always have a point of familiarity in any fauna.
The genus includes North America's common carpenter ants.

✧ banded sugar ant ✧
The banded sugar ant (Camponotus consobrinus) is a species of ant endemic to Australia. A member of the genus Camponotus in the subfamily Formicinae, it was described by German entomologist Wilhelm Ferdinand Erichson in 1842. Its common name refers to the ant's preference for sweet food and the distinctive orange-brown band around its...

Gathering together some of my ant digital drawings and thinking about doing more this winter.
I start missing ants a lot during winter. My colonies are asleep and there are no ants outside.

Carpenter vs. carpenter!
Today I spotted a carpenter bee (_Xylocopa_) with a disembodied carpenter ant (_Camponotus_) head still latched on to its leg! (Circled in second photo if you can't see it.)

My Camponotus americanus queen (an uncommon species I find here during flights), has the biggest brood yet of any #Camponotus queen I've ever raised. Curious if related to the new dirt/clay nest type I've been testing, or just a queen that's a bit more prone to egg laying
-
And here's why suspending egg sacs is a good idea. Two carpenter ants (_Camponotus_) voraciously tearing apart a different kind of spider egg sac, a ball of reddish silk fixed to substrate (in this case, tree bark, but I've also seen them on rocks). Not sure what species makes these.
-
I caught her laying an egg! The egg was quickly whisked off, across the outworlds to their second log. They like to keep most of the brood in this second log, but keep the older pupae in the log with the queen. Possibly there is a difference in humidity or temperature?
It’s dangerous for ants to transport eggs and pupae outside of the nest, but they must feel the difference in conditions is worth it.
This queen has produced heaps of eggs. #camponotus #ants Look at all she’s done this spring!
-
They are such beautiful ants! You *almost* forget how ravenous, warlike and sneaky they are!
The queens are all about the same shade of yellow/orange— which shows they all emerged at once. As their exoskeletons harden, their color will darken. In this species the wings are almost black—very striking! I hope the next batch isn’t all males— though this colony is massive— to think there were only 8 of them years ago.
