Yet another species of ant on this elm tree (and the carpenters are still asleep!) this is probably Lasius, maybe Lasius neoniger?

I’ve been waiting for the carpenter ants who live in this elm tree to wake up. (they must still be having their coffee) It’s still cold. But I know the carpenters have a huge nest in this tree.

“silky” field ants of the Formica genus have rather large eyes and they can move very quickly. Every time I pick one up she would run to the edge of my hand and launch herself into oblivion to escape. She can see that I am a large creature in a way other ants might not be aware of.
