There is a scene in “Consider Her Ways” where the ants read by running over the text in books. This was so delightful I drew it. The photos of Atta laevigata by @alexwild were very helpful. #art #antart #atta #considerHerWays

When they first brought the Atta Cephelotes colony to the American Museum of Natural History, there were lots of large soldier ants, guarding the path where the ants, carried their leaves back to their nest, but now having settled in, you see hardly any soldiers at all. I had to look in the nest near what I suspect is the Queen’s chamber to even find one! They may have stopped producing soldiers because, in a closed environment, they just aren’t necessary.

Bonus cute photo of a queen and her minima worker. I love how the caption implies that the scientist could not separate them! 💗🐜 #ants #atta #queenant #leafcutters #antposting

At @hack_lu #hacklu2024 Jeroen Pinoy concludes that the #MITRE #ATTA&K framework doesn’t have sufficient granularity to enable researchers and defenders to tell cloaking from other events/threat vectors.
Hint: You can model this in #OpenTIDE :)

We shouldn’t be surprised that ants sing songs. I suspect ants would be surprised that soft mushy creatures like ourselves can make noise at all as we are so disadvantaged having no sturdy shell for our limbs or body.

What is a #mite of the #Histiostomatidae doing in nests of an #antnest? About behavior, dispersal, #phoresy, life strategy. A 2008 study about the life strategy of mite #Histiostoma #bakeri (Histiostomatidae) in nests of the leafcutting ant #Atta #texana.
According to this, the desired location of the mites for mating and reproduction is the detritus chambers of the ant nest.

Really really enjoying the new #SigurRos album #Átta.
It is slow and patient, but still potent and moving. It's the difference between making sourdough bread from scratch and buying a loaf of white bread from the store: it takes time and labor to get through but you are rewarded for waiting and enduring.
I'm also reminded of being younger and enjoying their music. I had more time then to listen intently and listening to this album now gently pushes me into that space again.

CW: meaning of burning rainbow flag on the cover art of Sigur Rós' "Átta"
#SigurRós themselves are, at least as far as I can tell, until now very vague on what exactly they want the picture to mean. This part in a Guardian interview, in which Jónsi says “Trans and queer and gay rights have been trampled on so much recently. It’s scary to see. Around the world also, it feels like we’re going backwards.” was the best I could find:

CW: music, relationships, burning rainbow flag
After ten years, there’s a new #SigurRós album. #Átta (“eight”, as it’s the eighth album) sounds very much as always, I’d say. Ethereal, melodic, very slow and very well-suited as the background music for an evening chilling in bed with a loved one.
Not quite sure what’s with the cover though. Sigur Rós' singer Jónsi is openly gay, so I don’t think that it should be interpreted as aggressive. *Edit:* See follow-up posts below.

Although leafcutter ants evoke the steamy tropics, our local Texas species is a decidedly winter animal, scarcely seen from July to October but going gangbusters on warmer days in February.
