There is a scene in “Consider Her Ways” where the ants read by running over the text in books. This was so delightful I drew it. The photos of Atta laevigata by @alexwild were very helpful. #art #antart #atta #considerHerWays

When they first brought the Atta Cephelotes colony to the American Museum of Natural History, there were lots of large soldier ants, guarding the path where the ants, carried their leaves back to their nest, but now having settled in, you see hardly any soldiers at all. I had to look in the nest near what I suspect is the Queen’s chamber to even find one!They may have stopped producing soldiers because, in a closed environment, they just aren’t necessary.

Leider konnte Danny Lewin den Erfolg seiner Erfindung nicht
mehr miterleben. Am 11. September 2001 ging Danny Lewin an Bord des American-Airlines-Flugs Nummer 11 von Boston nach
Los Angeles. Er saß direkt hinter Mohammed #Atta, dem führenden Kopf hinter den #Terror anschlägen vom 11. September 2001. Danny wurde getötet, als die Entführer das Flugzeug unter ihre Kontrolle brachten — wahrscheinlich, als er versuchte, sie zu stoppen.
(Anscheinend wurde er von hinten angegriffen, als er sich Atta entgegenstellte.) Damit war Danny sowohl die erste Person, die bei einem Anschlag des 11. September 2001 getötet wurde, als auch möglicherweise die erste Person, die starb, weil sie versuchte, diesen Anschlag zu vereiteln. Zum Zeitpunkt seines Todes war Daniel #Lewin 31 Jahre alt.

We shouldn’t be surprised that ants sing songs. I suspect ants would be surprised that soft mushy creatures like ourselves can make noise at all as we are so disadvantaged having no sturdy shell for our limbs or body.

Really really enjoying the new #SigurRos album #Átta.
It is slow and patient, but still potent and moving. It's the difference between making sourdough bread from scratch and buying a loaf of white bread from the store: it takes time and labor to get through but you are rewarded for waiting and enduring.
I'm also reminded of being younger and enjoying their music. I had more time then to listen intently and listening to this album now gently pushes me into that space again.

After ten years, there’s a new #SigurRós album. #Átta (“eight”, as it’s the eighth album) sounds very much as always, I’d say. Ethereal, melodic, very slow and very well-suited as the background music for an evening chilling in bed with a loved one.
Not quite sure what’s with the cover though. Sigur Rós' singer Jónsi is openly gay, so I don’t think that it should be interpreted as aggressive. *Edit:* See follow-up posts below.

Although leafcutter ants evoke the steamy tropics, our local Texas species is a decidedly winter animal, scarcely seen from July to October but going gangbusters on warmer days in February.
