  1. Books I would like to write but have no time:
    - Robotic #Astronomy (actually, I do work on this)
    - Server-Side #Swift with #SwiftNIO
    - Astronomical Image Processing with #FITS
    - Understanding Swift Macros
    - Understanding Swift Concurancy
    - Neuromuscular disorders - molecular pathways
    - Understanding Computational Molecular Biology
    - Writing Modern Unix Tools with Swift
    - Designing an Exabyte File Archive
    - Making Your Old House #Energy and Food Independent
    - High Performance Swift

  2. Restaurant Manager: "What seems to be the matter."

Customer: "I was telling your waiter here that there's a fly in my soup!"

    Manager: "Is there?"

Waiter: [Holding a spoon with a fly in it.] "See for yourself, sir."

Manager: "I see. I am so sorry. We'll replace the soup, and I'll talk to the kitchen staff."

Customer: "I had a conniption over this, you know."

Manager: "Oh, did you order a conniption?"

    Customer: "What?"

Waiter: "No. They did not order a conniption."

Manager: "Tell you what. The conniption is on the house. We won't charge you for it."

Customer: "What? You charge for conniptions?"

Waiter: [Looking around worried.] "Not so loud!"

    Customer: "Why..."

Manager: "Other customers will want conniptions too if they know that we offer them on the house."

    Customer: "What..."

Manager: "Since our conniptions are imported, they are on the expensive side."

Customer: "That does it! Now I'm having a fit!"

Waiter: "We don't serve fits here. If you want a fit, you'll have to go to the restaurant next door."

  3. @Wingless

In contrary. Most #astronomy (Python-based) image processing is taking ages. And to learn IRAF or MIDAS you need a PhD. Very bad for education!
Our #swift based implementation of the #fits format is about 20-50 times faster than the NASA’s classic implementation (and Python is way behind NASA). This allows interactive image processing on the iPad. This is how students should learn astronomy - not the ‘70 Fortran junk!

  4. I have some thoughts on outfit composition and capsule wardrobes, especially when you are trying to do fashion on a limited budget.

So first off: A good outfit is where everything makes sense and compliments everything else. It ought to highlight the face, without distracting the eye to anything else.

The basic, capsule wardrobe example would be blue jeans and white t-shirt. Attached is an example. It's basic, inoffensive, does not distract the eye, while also highlighting the face.

However... that fit is the poster child for basic. There are so many cool clothes out there which are not white tshirts, basic shoes, and blue jeans. For example, this fit from Margelia: very drapey very oversized fit. Everything works with everything in that outfit. I love it.

But each part of the Margelia outfit creates space for the other part--swapping in a white t-shirt or blue jeans wouldn't quite make as much sense as that outfit as a whole. In my opinion, the Margelia outfit is so much cooler than the blue jeans and white t-shirt... but it requires commitment, and space to create such a fit.

I'm gonna follow up with some examples of clothes that I love, but don't really work in a capsule wardrobe sense because they... require some thinking in their use.

  6. Does anyone know if there is a command line #JPEG to #FITS converter for #Linux ?

Yes, I know it is completely bass ackwards, but I have *reasons*.

  7. I am a giant person.

We need to change the size of everything to fit me. Please get on this immediately.

  8. This isn't fair: the #FITS for that awesome latest #JWST's picture from #Rho #Ophiuchi aren't publicly available :(

  9. I'm at ESTEC (ESA's European Space Research and Technology Centre) in the Netherlands this week for my first #PLATO science working team meeting as community scientist. One interesting discussion has been on astronomical file formats (honestly)... Future NASA missions look like they might move from #fits to #ASDF, while other astronomical surveys have started using #HDF5. But it's tough to try to predict exactly where the community will be in 5-10 years time. Input welcome!
