I have a feeling there will be several of these…

This fall term I will be on a research leave. I am temporarily (and voluntarily!) relieved of all my regular duties in order to spend time doing research — the research I would normally do in my free time, in the moments between meetings, on the weekends… Suddenly that is my main job; I’m not quite sure how I’ll respond once the term starts again, but I’ll do my best to manage.

And what will I be researching? A couple of things: (1/5)

Held evaluation sessions today for 2 of 6 student films made this semester. Intense day and I'm completely wiped, but a very good day too. I think the method we have for evaluating works of art made in a collaborative team works really well now, and the students seem to be responding well.

Short form: the students had developed documents outlining what they want to achieve in terms of increased knowledge, greater skill, and artistic development. In the evaluation sessions (done with the whole cohort and all faculty) we look at how the work they have made measures up against those documents, that we call "statements of intent".

It keeps the discussions from becoming about people's taste or perceptions of quality, and helps us stay focussed on learning and development.

No grades, or even pass/fail.
