  1. Finally! finished my article. It’s been a long slog, but I now have 7400 words looking at fine arts, practice-based filmmaking education in light of experiential and social constructivist educational philosophy, cognitive science, and neuroscience. It’s been a lot of fun researching—and it’s definitely shed light on many issues I both need and want to explore further—but happy to be finished this one.

The editors of the journal I’m sending it to have seen an earlier draft and seem keen to send it to peer review. Hopefully they’ll still think that now it’s complete! Just a final read through (not tonight!) and clean up the list of references and off it goes.

  2. Ok, so a draft is done. Still rough, but an overview of the educational philosophies and pedagogical approaches that can relate to film school education, and perhaps more broadly to practice-based arts.

It still needs a rewrite or two before submission, but I like the idea of getting a draft out there. Perhaps it’s even of interest for some of you…

#artificialintelligence #generatieveai #onderwijs #vygotsky #ontwerpprincipes #edutoot #leren

  4. The First Universe We Ever Knew

There is something humbling about studying human development — as if each chapter is less a lesson and more a reminder that we are all, in some way, still forming. The science offers its clean definitions and tidy theories, but beneath them runs a deeper current, one that feels almost mythic: the story of how a person becomes. Somewhere in the background, a quiet truth hums:we are always mid‑sentence in our own becoming. We like to imagine development as a straight ascent, a staircase […]

  5. My research into educational theory and philosophy and how to relate them to the teaching practices in film and media arts schools continues. Here are some notes from a talk I gave on April 16th, which I believe will form the basis of an article I plan to finish before the summer.

  6. “Explain it so a ten-year-old would understand!” A hundred-year-old pedagogical model combined with a theory about language models has helped me think about how to best use ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini as sounding boards and for learning new things – without losing the ability to “fly by the seat of my pants.”

  7. I was trying to post this on my blog, but it seems to be not cooperating these days… So here comes a long thread on #Pedagogy, #FineArtsEducation, #4ECognition, #Phenomenology, #Dewey, and #Vygotsky…

I have a feeling there will be several of these…

This fall term I will be on a research leave. I am temporarily (and voluntarily!) relieved of all my regular duties in order to spend time doing research — the research I would normally do in my free time, in the moments between meetings, on the weekends… Suddenly that is my main job; I’m not quite sure how I’ll respond once the term starts again, but I’ll do my best to manage.

And what will I be researching? A couple of things: (1/5)

  12. Far from difficult. :blobnom:

Film school students are subject to quite a forbidding lexicon - but I have found they enjoy proxemics (relative distances) and haptics (touchings)

    - a quick code that 🎬 helps with the scripting, on-set blocking (shared vocabulary with actors), and class analysis 💪

    Ah, cribbing.

This is one more reason why on reflection I find the school teaching and learning so much more satisfying than HE.

You are THERE when the learning takes place, and week to week you witness first hand the skills and intellectual development in full flight.
