  1. After spending some time hacking my own vision out of necessity today, Iron (wo)Man style, I finally managed to finish the analysis of how we are currently using Nextcloud for file sync and sharing. I don't know who might find this chart interesting, but it is detailed and those details are accurate for our setup. Reason I need this is because before you migrate to a better system, it is a good practice to see things clearly as they are first.

  6. Whether you want to automatically sync your photos or audio recordings from your phone directly to your desktop PC, or to sync your notes between all your devices, free and open source Syncthing will help you do this securely, privately, and reliably. I'll show how I'm doing this, and how I'm also keeping older versions of changes my notes so that I can restore them if needed (a bit like a basic backup).

Unlike many backup or sync applications, Syncthing will sync any number of folders directly between your devices, so no server is required. This can be done without even knowing the IP addresses of the devices. It can also sync over the Internet to a friend, if you want to share backup space with each other - you can set your own encryption password for each folder to keep your data private.

  8. I want to gather data off my existing PCs onto the hard drive of the laptop I just got. I could buy an external hard drive to copy it all onto, then copy to the new laptop. But surely there's some way to do this over the net, ideally on the local network? To avoid the extra purchase and double copying. I've had success doing this with SyncThing in the past, but the last time I tried it didn't seem to be working. I'll try again, but any other suggestions?

  10. Does anyone know if it's possible to use a NextCloud instance as a server-assisted SyncThing? So it helps synchronize files and folders between devices, without actually storing any of them on the server? Ideally making use of direct local connections if devices are on the same LAN.
