  1. welp, that's a wrap. The public instance of #FakeRelay (fakerelay.gervas.io) is down.

it was a fun thing that mostly kept on working unattended, and I'll call that a success.

  6. Now that #GetMoarFediverse and #FakeRelay are shutting down, does anyone know of alternative services with similar functionality? I’ve also been using #FediBuzz for a long time, but I’m unsure how effective it is. #mastoadmin

  10. About 1 month ago I started to use my single user instance more for IT related stuff (split up the topics from my account on mountains.social).

The below graph show the sizes of the PostgreSQL database and the S3 bucket for media storage.

It starts with basically a flatliner (before I started to use it). Then I configured some relays (especially FakeRelay) and the graph goes up. The second increase is the configuration of FediFetcher, to backfill conversations. FediFetcher basically doubled the media size, but increases the benefit by a multiple of that.

  13. On mountains.social we have been using the FakeRelay from @g3rv4 almost straight after opening the instance. This is really the most useful addition to the instance, hands down!

Have now also activated the FakeRelay on my single user instance. This will dramatically enhance my timeline.

Thanks for a great service, Gervasio! 🙌

  18. @mike IMO relays are a very two-edged sword. I've disabled all my 'normal' relays, and rely almost entirely on #FakeRelay / #GetMoarFediverse now: This is like a relay, but only pulls in post that are tagged with hashtags I follow.

This will work best for single user instances, but on a multi-user instance, you could just hard-code a list of hashtags.

See my post here for more info, if you are interested: blog.thms.uk/2023/01/setting-u

  23. @g3rv4 Hi threre, checking out the #FakeRelay + #GetMoarFediverse solution, and wondering if you’re still offering single user instance admins like myself access to your fakerelay.gervas.io service? My instance domain is cdrum.social. Thanks! Really appreciate it! ;-)

  24. @yeri I found this blog post that I’m exploring. Two options - #fedibuzz and #FakeRelay / #GetMoarFediverse - along with #fedifetcher.. Will report back!

  29. I’ve been running a single-user instance Mastodon server for a few months. Being a single-user instance, it can be fairly quiet at times and one of the aspects I've been exploring is finding and adding targeted content to the Federated timeline…

Luckily there is a solution: FakeRelay from @g3rv4

  34. @g3rv4 Hi G3rv4. I wrote a thing to get trending tags and generate a config to import them via GetMoar & FakeRelay

    github.com/Poag/GetMoarTrendin

Its a bit ugly but it appears to work!

  38. @jan On mountains.social I use #FakeRelay (github.com/g3rv4/FakeRelay) and #GetMoarFediverse (github.com/g3rv4/GetMoarFedive) from @g3rv4. You can specify which hashtags and from which instances you want to inject into your federated timeline. That really works out. My current config can be see here: github.com/spiezmaestro/mounta

  48. Finally got around to configuring #FakeRelay and #GetMoarFediverse on this instance, the way I had it on my previous instance. Now I automatically get content with hashtags that interest me in my feed again. It is such a lifesaver for small #selfhosted servers. #mastoadmin

Thanks to @g3rv4 and his excellent work on #FakeRelay (github.com/g3rv4/FakeRelay) and #GetMoarFediverse (github.com/g3rv4/GetMoarFedive) there is now a way to more specifically pull relevant posts into the federated timeline. The instance admin can define which hashtags from which instances are pulled, thus providing content more relevant to the people on the instance.
