→ Requiem for a Glacier
https://www.blind-magazine.com/news/requiem-for-a-glacier/“Beyond the #aesthetic dimension and the profound #humanity emanating from [Ragnar #Axelsson's] work, Isabel Siben […] emphasizes its prophetic quality. "[…] the traditional #culture of the #Arctic population is not only in the process of vanishing, but it is unable to withstand the destructive effects of such major forces as the #economy and #climate change," she analyzes. Yet this lucidity never descends into #miserabilism or facile #exoticism.”

Musical Interlude: I love listening to Ippolitov-Ivanov while driving in the mountains. This evocative piece is a great tune for travelers.
"Turkish Fragments: 1. Caravan," composed by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, performed by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, conducted by Arthur Fagen.

Musical Interlude: Today is the birthday of one of my favorite composers, Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859-1935). He's criminally overlooked these days. I think he would have made a great film composer; his skill with musical illustration is remarkable. Here's his most famous composition, part of his "Caucasian Sketches" suite.
"Procession of the Sardar," composed by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, performed by the Scottsdale Philharmonic, Ajay Patel conducting.

Musical Interlude: I'm a longtime fan of Canadian classical troupe Quartetto Gelato, and this is from my favorite of their albums, dedicated to the Orient Express, and with pieces illustrating various stops along the legendary train's route. We have London, Paris, Munich, Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest, and finally Istanbul, which this represents. And I never thought accordion could sound so exotic. (Yes, they're oboe, cello, violin, and accordion...)
"Turkish Circus," performed by Quartetto Gelato.

When a band of french white guys play music inspired by afrobeat and psychedelic cumbia it's not like the bar of cultural sensitivity they need to clear to be unproblematic is particularly high.
But then they name their band "Cannibale", their single " Not easy to cook" with lyrics like "I am a delicate and sweet dish" and frankly I don't know what to say anymore. Like... Fuck you? Yeah, that's about the extent of my opinion on this. Fuck you hard. Like, what the fuck is wrong with you?https://cannibale.bandcamp.com/album/not-easy-to-cook

I wish for nuanced conversations about #CulturalReappropriation, #Othering, #Exoticism, and #EthnicIdentity. In #HipHop and other forms of #ElectronicMusicking.
Thing is, though I have negative reactions to much of this, I also “get” it.
Something of a classic, for me, is a conversation between #StevenFeld and #CharlesKeil.

The Swedish minister for Culture and Democracy (aren't all ministers for democracy?) is a whigger. Maybe not Trudeau class RP, but still. Her husband is a sort of shaman or something. #exoticism
