The (in retrospect rather unsurprising) outcome of an experiment, where students were allowed to do their midterm exam as a take-home exam, but were made to do the final in-person, is that even students who did exceptionally well in the mid-terms did miserable in the final.
I've woken up to the exact same reality. Take-home exercises worked perfectly fine over the last decade, with a strong correlation of the performance in the take-home exercises and the final in-person written exam. But this year it's different. Students with a perfect score on the (take-home) exercises barely scored any points in the (in-person) final. (Also, the AI slop handed in by some students is excessively verbose and frustrating to correct.)
So, I'll have to change the course setup in the future. That's a pity, as I think that take-home exercises are a good thing in general.

Oral exams are a good idea, but hard to implement: needs lots of time and consistency in the evaluation.
Pen and paper scale better, and, applied as exams consisting of 100 true/false statements with 1 point for a correct answer, -1 for a wrong one and 0 for not answering, the only effort is to compose the list; a machine will score the exams.
As a student, these exams are hard but one fees they truly test what one knows.
As faculty, it's not that hard to find 100 statements that don't overlap with those of previous years.
