  1. Not a lot of time this evening. Just enough to crane the battery box into the engine bay.

Weighed it while I was at it. The box and HVJB come in at 96kg. Quite a bit less than I thought. I was expecting a good bit over 100kg.

  3. Battery box is DONE!

It was a little nerve wracking making all of the connections, not gonna lie. I checked and rechecked every connection to make sure it was right. Plus I had a very specific order for plugging things in to minimise danger. Having the pack sitting at full voltage before closing the last panel was a sweaty moment.

  5. Accelerator pedal went in yesterday.

One bolt through the floor at the bottom. Another bolt through a brackety thing at the top. Made the brackety thing by sticking a bit of flat bar in the vice and just whacking it into shape. Came out fairly neat. Will need a coat of paint, but time is really ticking so that is squarely in the domain of “later problems”.

  7. Stripped down the original loom for the BMS to just the bare bones that I needed last night. Didn’t want a bunch of extra loose plugs and wires knocking around the inside of my battery pack. It’s now just power for the satellites and the can loop the runs from module to module. Plugged it all in this morning to make sure I can pull data out of the pack.

  9. This battery is starting to look like something. This is the driver side; the front of the pack is on the left of the photo. The thick orange HV cables are just loosely put in place to check fit. Nothing to accidentally touch that’s over ~50V at this point. The little black boxes strapped to the end of each module are original BMS satellites (this pack came out of a BMW).

  11. These long summer evenings are great for getting stuff done on the car.

All of the bits to go into the engine bay are painted. They’re not beautiful, but they will definitely do. I got sick of dealing with the spray gun so I just painted them with a brush.

  13. Today I made an extension for the pushrod on the brake booster so it’s actually, y’know, connected to the pedal. This is one of those reminders that you can do a lot with just an angle grinder and a welder. It’s just a thickish piece of flat bar with a hole at either end.

  15. It has been a good while since I’ve posted any update on the Mustang. I haven’t been idle mind! The big thing I’ve been working on is The Driveshaft Saga. It was something that I predicted would be a pain, and, sure enough, it was.

  17. Always love to see an #EVConversion of a cute #VintageCar, especially since this guy managed to do it for less than $4k.

  19. The fuel tank tub got stripped back to bare metal with a polycarbide disc. Then a coat of zinc etch primer and a coat of black.

  20. Amazing how much space is freed up when the car bits are attached to the car and not strewn around the garage!

  21. Did a quick test fit of the HV cables that'll run from the inverter to the motor of course. The long one goes to the near port and the short one goes to the far port - so they're sort of backward lengthwise, but there's plenty of length, so no worries really.

  22. After some cutting/welding/grinding I ended up with this.

I was pretty happy with myself until I realised my mistake. The front mount is 'hard-mounted' but the other two are 'soft-mounted'. I.e., they're sitting on top of the rubber land rover engine mounts.

So, I'll have to re-do the front mount. It'll need to attach to the faceplate like the others. Ah well, it's only tacked together.

  23. I got the M8 version of these threaded spacers (I used the M6 version in the battery box to space out the modules). I just needed to make arm to reach from the faceplate of the motor out to these spacers. There are three mountings in total. One on either side and one on the front.

  24. Todays job was to mount the inverter. It will sit right above the front end of the motor. The DC input from the battery is on the 'back' and the AC output is on the 'front'. The coolant in/outlets are on either side.

  25. Also did final measurements of the propshaft length (now that the position was locked in) to send off to the driveshaft shop to have a custom one made up. Needed to remove the flange from the diff and the rubber damper from the transmission output. Dropped them off so they could work to the exact parts.

  26. Few bits n' bobs done on the car over the past week or so.

Sorted out the rear mounting for the motor. I got a rubber mat, cut out a couple of rectangles and used them as a damper. There's a metal plate on top that bolts up into the motor (cut out a little of the mat to make space for the bolt heads) and down through the mats and the crossmember to hold it all together.

I'll probably put another bit of matt on the underside and a bit of flat bar.

  27. Plumbing job almost complete. I'm finding making brake lines very satisfying. You can make them so nice and neat.

The booster feeds the proportioning valve. Two lines run from there out to the front wheels - one just a short hop to the shock tower, the other runs across the firewall. The rear line goes through a residual pressure valve (drums on the rear) before running under the car. A flex line links this to the axle and splits from there.

  28. iBooster all wired up with minimal swearing and, in what seems like a minor miracle, the thing actually works. I guess it’s been sitting on the shelf so long I started to worry the thing was a dud.

  29. Awww, yissssss. New wheels arrived for the #EV #Mustang. Quick little test fit at lunch time and they look gooooood. Time to go tyre shopping.
