For years, I warned British #Europhiles to lower their hopes: the #UK is untrusted in Europe. Now that mistrust has a pricetag.
Brussels knows that #Farage is set to win in 2029.
So the #EU demands that a future British government #ukgov pay up if they quit a post-#Brexit “reset” deal with #Starmer. The clause states that if either side pulls out, it must pay compensation that would include the costs of setting up the renewed border controls.

Post-#Brexit, British #Europhiles show no comprehension of how the #UK exasperated the #EU27. It wasn't just 5 years of Brexit drama using most of the #EU's political bandwidth, and UK repeatedly negotiating in bad faith; it was nearly 40 years of handbaggery & hooliganism.
Britain in the EU was a major headache for two generations.
UK rejoining would have to be weighed by the #EU27 as a tradeoff between the benefits of enlargement and the downsides of the UK's sustained disruption.

That allowed #Brexiteers to legitimately sell Brexit as the only chance to halt or reverse #EUfederalism. Instead of #Brexit being sold on its (dubious) merits, they were free to approach the 2016 referendum as the only democratic chance to even apply the brakes. That political gift to #Farage was created by the British #Europhiles.
It's probable that if e.g. #Maastricht had been rejected, the UK would still be in the #EU.
