  1. Sydney gardener fined almost $200,000 for removing 287 trees to improve harbourside mansion’s water views

"It began with a gardener being hired to trim grass at a harbourside mansion in Sydney – and escalated to payments being left in a shoe for the unlawful felling of hundreds of native trees in protected bushland.

Now a court has fined Yi Wang $187,500 for his role in organising and carrying out the destruction of 287 trees from council-owned foreshore bushland at Woodford Bay in Longueville in late 2023.

The New South Wales land and environment court justice Rachel Pepper convicted Wang last week for helping to orchestrate the clearing of 1,210 sq metres of land beside a waterfront property on Lucretia Avenue.

Wang pleaded guilty to three offences in relation to the unlawful clearing, which Pepper heard destroyed potential habitat for a range of protected and threatened animals, including powerful owls and microbats. It could take three decades to recover.

In September 2024, the council installed a huge double-sided banner on the site of what it labelled “tree vandalism”, demonstrating its “commitment to obscure” harbour views gained by the destruction of the habitat and pledging it would remain in place until the trees grew back “to a suitable height”."

  2. Santos could drill for new gas in Beetaloo basin within weeks as Murray Watt urged to ‘do his job’

"The decision, published late last month, has prompted calls from environment groups for the federal environment minister, Murray Watt, to use his powers to “call in” the development for an assessment of its potential effects on water and threatened species under national nature laws.

Environment Centre of the Northern Territory (ECNT) executive director Kirsty Howey said she was concerned “the project is a gateway to full-scale fracking in the territory” after years of relatively slow development in the Beetaloo region south of Katherine and would add to the climate crisis."

  3. World’s biggest miner BHP backtracks on climate action with key projects put on ice, leaked documents reveal

"The world’s biggest miner has halted or delayed projects to cut vast amounts of emissions and has quietly war-gamed options to push major climate investments in its Western Australian iron ore operations into the next two decades, internal documents show.

An exclusive investigation based on documents leaked to the Guardian and the ABC’s Four Corners can reveal that BHP, one of Australia’s biggest historic emitters, has dumped plans for a facility that could have significantly reduced emissions and has put on ice renewable projects designed to power its iron ore operations.."

"The Northern Territory has released 4,000 sq km of land for onshore petroleum exploration, a move criticised by environmentalists.

The release area – more than five times the size of Singapore – is located within the Beetaloo basin, near the Amadeus gas pipeline and the Stuart Highway.

The Finocchiaro government announced the release at the North American Prospect Expo, a summit for oil and gas companies being held in Houston, Texas. Applications for exploration are open until 31 July."

  11. I must admit, I hadn't realised the #BalticSea #HarbourPorpoise population was in such a poor state.
The map figure in the paper shows how close the two explosions were to a chemical munitions dumping ground (11,000 tonnes dumped in 1947) too. I can't help feeling this was not accidental.
