I have a 1644 day streak on #Duolingo. 1644 days is 4.5 years. Do you remember what the world was like 4.5 years ago? I don’t. But I knew less Polish and Hindi.

Recently Duolingo released a major update to the structure of all courses. Many users hate it and complain about the #DuolingoUpdate. For me, Duolingo has basically become unusable. It is a mess. I do not enjoy using it any more. I am angry about the harebrained update.

But yeah, they got me hooked. I have grown attached to my streak.

My (science) Mastodon bubble is by no means a random sample of the population. The results are so clear, however, that I think they tell you something significant. I wish @duolingo just listened to their customers.

@linguistgoneforeign as far as I can gather, only via the "Early Bird" and "Night Owl" chests, or by completing the Friends Quest. I'm still on the fence whether I like the new #duolingoupdate.

IMHO the #duolingoupdate will be compared with #Windows8 for idiotic design changes.

I remember Microsoft saying everyone would eventually appreciate the Windows 8 Metro UI, similar to how Duolingo is defending its Path UI. People stayed away from Windows 8 in droves, and I think Duolingo will regret their change but will stick with it for a year or two before making something closer to the Tree UI.

I have to admit that the @[email protected] UI path update has made using the app less fun. Feels more like a grind. #duolingoUpdate #Duolingo

@emkingma I totally agree. I found the #DuolingoUpdate upsetting as well. Did you try alternatives yet and care to share your experiences? :)

So, I finally caved and bought a year's subscription on #Memrise. The app is always pushing a half price sub on app, so figured why not, especially having just cancelled my #Duolingo sub renewal after the current #DuolingoUpdate fiasco.

My main reason for subbing to Memrise is I wanted regular access to the pronunciation test. I know its probably not 100% accurate, but at least it forces me (a solo learner) to speak the language rather than just read or write.

Raging at the #DuolingoUpdate this evening. I wasted 1/2 an hour trying to do one lesson in their revamped Legendary level & failed because I kept getting unlearnt words/phrases despite everything before it being gold! If they're going to balls-up everyone's progress with the new layout, the least they could do is remove the 3 hearts limit. Seriously regretting paying for the Super version.

Meanwhile, in other bits of tech I've used daily in my life going to crud:

That Duolingo update that everyone's going to be forced to have from Nov 1 is terrible.

I've had it for a month and it's made my learning experience so much worse, and I say that as someone who has been paying for it.

I have cancelled my subscription, so it won't be renewing in December. Currently focusing on Babbel and Memrise.
