  1. The History of Emily Montague by Frances Brooke is considered to be the first "Canadian" novel.

    Frances Brooke (née Moore) wrote this love story, set in Canada, in Sillery (now Québec) not long after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, during the mid-1760s. The novel was published in England, though, and of course it pre-dates Confederation.
