  1. Forks of the Don, yesterday

looking first up the East Don, "white bridge" in the distance (Taylor Creek just out of sight behind it), to the Lower Don, then to the West Don, foamy because of the weir, with bonus Garfield

  6. Amazing!

#Toronto strangled the #DonRiver over a century ago into a concrete channel and buried the wetlands

    Recently, Toronto tried restoring them

"When one of the bulldozers was halted by thick green shoots, the machine operator soon realized that the sedges and cattails looked nothing like the other weeds...

...something both unexpected and profound: seeds and plant scraps, trapped underground for more than a century, had roared back to life"

  10. I’m disappointed this morning to hear that the Don River has flooded Bayview Avenue again. I thought that opening the new mouth of the Don last year and the wetlands there was supposed to prevent that from happening.

On the other hand, I see that the flooding is up above Rosedale Valley road, rather than in the lower Don. So maybe the situation has improved, and they just need to do more work upstream?

  21. Sunnybrook park in Toronto is one of many wonderful parks along the Don River. Here's how it looked 96 years ago today - and I've included a photo from today as well. Not that much has changed since 1928. wholemap.com/Oct3 #OTD #Toronto #TorontoPhoto #Sunnybrook #DonRiver #OnThisDay #BWPhotography #HistoricPhoto

  26. Looking south across Danforth Ave just west of Broadview, with the Don Valley to our right. The road down to the ravine is now the ramp to the DVP, but was Royal Drive, and Winchester Drive before that. The Danforth Avenue lavatory will be built on the right side of the photo the next year, and the bank building now the Pizza Pizza. wholemap.com/Sept12

  31. More flooding of the Don River - this time in 1916, 108 years ago today on March 27th. We're standing on the Dundas Ave bridge (called Wilton Avenue at the time) looking north, up river to the Gerrard Street bridge. In the distance on the right is the Don Jail. There is also a photo looking south at the same time. #DonRiver #flooding #OTD #Toronto #TorontoPhoto #BWPhotography #HistoricPhoto wholemap.com/historic/toronto.

  32. I haven't yet posted a photo of the construction of the Bloor Street viaduct - until today - here is an early construction photo from 1915, 109 years ago today, Feb 27th, 1915. Technically it is called the Prince Edward Viaduct, but some archives even call it the Danforth Viaduct. #bridge #DonRiver #Toronto #TorontoPhoto #BWPhotography #HistoricPhoto wholemap.com/historic/toronto.

  37. Another photo today of how wide the flooding on the Don River was at times. We're looking north 106 years ago today, Feb 26th, 1918 from Dundas (called Wilton Ave at the time), with the Don Jail on the hill on the right at Gerrard Street. You can see the view looking south, and other Feb 26th pictures at wholemap.com/Feb26 #flooding #DonRiver #Toronto #TorontoPhoto #BWPhotography #HistoricPhoto wholemap.com/historic/toronto.

  38. We're going back 125 years ago today in Toronto - looking across the Don River to the Rosedale Creek sewer after the ice broke up, on Feb 24th, 1899. In the background you can see St. James Cemetery along the hill. #ice #DonRiver #Toronto #TorontoPhoto #BWPhotography #HistoricPhoto wholemap.com/historic/toronto.
