  26. I am using dnscontrol for quite some time now.
I have several domains at different hosters, it's much easier to configure them with a bunch of files instead of tedious clicking in web UIs.
Now I have finally set up a git repo and automation to check and push changes automatically :)
Time for making some config hacks prettier.

  32. Moved the primary DNS server over from Ubuntu Server to FreeBSD 14. Took a bit to knock off the rust, but everything is working perfectly. Cleaned up all the zones, still using `dnscontrol` to populate everything. Perfect fit for a Raspberry Pi. #dns #freebsd #dnscontrol

  33. The #dnscontrol-typescript-template lets you import all your current #DNS data with just a bit of setup. The import script /does not/ push any changes to your DNS provider. It only reads from them using the `dnscontrol get-zones` command.

Maybe this will help at least one of y'all: github.com/hw0lff/dnscontrol-t

  34. At the end I wanted to automate importing new domains, so I wrote a little python script for that.
It uses #dnscontrol to fetch all known zones from the DNS provider and imports them into my typescript project.

Sadly, I haven't found many examples of #dnscontrol projects in the wild.
Especially ones that use typescript are basically non-existent.
So I decided to turn my automated project into a template that everyone can use to bootstrap their #dnscontrol setup.

  35. I wanted to have some integrity tests for the stuff I wrote, /before/ pushing changes to my provider.
So, I let #dnscontrol export my data as zone files beforehand and give those to `named-checkzone` to run some RFC compliance/integrity checks (e.g. that SRV records refer to A or AAAA records).

With the `just` command runner I've built myself an easy to use interface which automates testing, development and deployment steps.

  36. One little downside is that the code #dnscontrol wants is basically EcmaScript5.
Which is lacking many helpful features such as typing, classes, modules, etc.

So I configured webpack and babel-js to compile typescript to ES5 and let #dnscontrol evaluate that.
Now I had a modern language!

  37. A few days ago I've learned about dnscontrol.org/ which lets you "maintain your DNS data as a high-level DSL".

Meaning, instead of having to write correct bind files by hand or having to use your DNS providers website, you can write code. #dnscontrol evaluates your code, converts it to API calls to your DNS provider(s), and lets you preview your changes before they occur.

This is makes #DNS management very easy for me.
And I can put it into git too!

    Yay, infrastructure as code!

  43. We just did a huge DNS migration between providers of the biggest DNS zones we run at @amazeeio and tools like #gitlab and #dnscontrol make it much more manageable. Also, bonus points for dns_compare (github.com/and-win/dns_compare) which also helped us to be sure that we didn't miss anything during the migration.

  44. What are people using for #DNS management these days?

I'm currently using #Terraform but even for my personal stuff (12 zones, up to a couple of dozen records per zone) Terraform is very slow; different providers configure records differently which is annoying; and quality of providers is highly variable (or sometimes not even available for a given DNS service).

#dnscontrol seems interesting for uniformity but... JS as a DSL 😑

  45. @major as an alternative to terraform check out #dnscontrol, which is what Stack Exchange uses for all their domain records (that mostly point to the same set of servers). Good write up at blog.serverfault.com/2017/04/1 and the GitHub readme

  46. So I was wrong in thinking that my ISP did not support IPv6. They provide an ADSL router which does not give a good WiFi coverage throughout the house. I disable its WiFi & connect the Asus RT86U (have 2 of them in mesh) to this ADSL router. Turns out IPv6 was disabled 🤦‍♂️ by default on Asus and none of my IPv6 connections were going through.

Basically #Hetzner charges 0.6 Euro less if one does not opt for an IPv4 address. They are gonna increase prices from Jan and I can save 0.6 euros now 😂 per month. Not much but still.

And again #dnscontrol is great. Changed A to AAAA in dns config, run a sanity check with dnscontrol preview (it detected a typo) and then do a dnscontrol push to update dns records on the dns provider. Just a minute or two to get this change and done.
