DNS — это та штука, которую замечаешь только когда она падает. Весь твой трафик, почта, сертификаты, доступ к админкам — всё висит на том, что кто-то корректно ответит на запрос «а где example.com ?». У меня этим «кем-то» был Cloudflare. Для большинства это правильный выбор — удобно, быстро, бесплатно. Но в какой-то момент я поймал себя на мысли, что фундамент всей моей инфраструктуры я не контролирую: он живёт в чужом дашборде, по чужим правилам и лимитам. Я перенёс все свои зоны — несколько десятков доменов — на собственную DNS-инфра- структуру. Ниже — зачем, какая получилась архитектура, и обо что я споткнулся по дороге.

I self-host the DNS for my domains for more than 20 years now.

2026 now finally was the year, where I decomissioned the last BIND server and replaced it with a PowerDNS, containerized in Podman :podman: and a SQLite backend.

I already migrated the hidden-primariy to PowerDNS in 2022 (because of the REST API, compatibility with Traefik, easier DNSSEC handling and the higher flexibility) and now my secondaries are also migrated.

Nontheless, BIND was one of the most stable pieces of technology that I've ever used. But it also felt a bit unwieldy and old-fashined ins some ways.

Can I convince you to fail over to forwarding, when recursion did not return an answer (i.e NOERROR with empt ANSWER-section, also known as NODATA)

I.e. I have an overriding zone (including DHCP records and stuff, so it's not static) which is overlayed ontop of the public DNS zone (AUTHSERVER is private, and has domain.tld Zone), and UPSTREAM sees a different view of domain.tld.

I run my own #nameservers or #DNS if you will, and have done so for over 25 years. Initially based on #BIND (aka named) but I later moved to #PowerDNS, There are numerous frontends of varying quality available for PowerDNS. I have opinions on those, but this isn't about them.

For the secondary name servers (in the old and less enlightened days known as slaves) I've always run the same software as the primary. First BIND, then PowerDNS. Recently though, I've been testing out what appears to be a much simpler alternative: #NSD by #Amsterdam based NLnet Labs.

Using #CatalogZones - a new concept to me - I'm able to run secondaries with TSIG notifies and zone transfers as well as fully supported primary signed DNSSEC with a configuration of only 40 lines. No updates needed when adding or removing zones.

For this to work well though, some configuration is required for each zone on the primary. With a little trigger and function magic, this can be automized by the database.
