I've been lazy lately, there's a roll of film in my tank, and it's been there for the last few weeks. I think it's finally time to move my arse and get it developed.
-
So a friend of mine asked me to develop his roll of Fomapan 100. Sure, no problem. But, when I asked did he shot it as box speed, or maybe he pushed it, I got an answer I wasn't prepared for - "I don't remember anymore, a bit under 100, probably 80".
And now I'm sitting here, not having a clue how to develop it - thinking about Rodinal 1+50 at 7 min straight, and hope for the best. 🤔

Just created a (quite ugly, but) useful timer tool for developing film: https://indutny.github.io/filmdev/
Native iOS stopwatch doesn't prevent screen from sleeping, which was the main motivation for the app. In addition to that, I added sounds for when agitation is needed and a built-in developing time calculator based on the solution temperature.
Probably not useful for anyone, but me!

So far so good, one roll done, three more to go!
That was Fomapan 200 in Rodinal 1+50, 7min at 22.5°C. -
APX100 needs 10 min, Fomapan 200 needs 9 min, Silberra 160 is done in 17 min and Rollei Retro 80 in 14 min, all in Rodinal 1+50. No two times are the same, each one must go alone. 😑
I have to stop procrastinating, let's go with Fomapan first.

The best practice is to keep the air away from the developer by some way of expelling the air from the bottle. Collapsible bottles are the easiest method, but they're hard to clean. Glass beads and marbles are an option, but added weight can be a problem. Anti-oxidizing sprays are probably the easiest method, there's Tetenal Protectan Spray that does the trick, but it's not the only option!
(that's my hand in the photo 😅)

A single roll of film won't fully exhaust the developer (at least if it's not something like Rodinal 1+100!), there's quite enough to develop at least one additional roll, or even more.
Although I wouldn't even try to reuse a Rodinal, I've found out that both FX-39 and Xtol (and XT-3) work just fine. Diluted FX-39 oxidizes significantly faster than diluted Xtol, but even when both start to haze up, there's still some life left in there. -
I know this technique I described in there might be a little controversial, but hey, it works - I've been reusing one-shot developers, diluted Xtol and FX-39, with good results. The attached photo is from a roll developed with XT-3 1+1 that's been reused for the fifth time. 😅
There are steps to do and steps to avoid when pushing the developers as far as they go, I've compiled my experience in a post: https://iso3200.org/blog/2024/02/using-two-shot-film-developers/

I love those two-shot film developers! You know, Rodinal, diluted Xtol, diluted FX-39 and the like - just like the usual one-shot developers, but I get to use them one additional time, with or without compensation. 😅
I had 400 ml of FX-39 used to develop a roll of Fomapan 200, and I just couldn't throw away a perfectly usable 40 ml of the developer! So I developed a roll of AgfaPhoto APX400 in it. 😁
