  1. @jannem If possible, I try to use #OpenSource software. The OpticFilm 7300 + Skanlite gives me 7200 dpi, which is plenty. Scratches and dust removal would be nice, though—I'm not sure if my scanner supports that.

And the whole open vs. closed source aside, Vuescan would have cost more than what I paid for the scanner. I'd rather invest the money I've saved in new films. 😁

  2. Finally bought a #Plustek #OpticFilm7300 to properly digitize my home-developed films.

After struggling for a good two hours to get the old SilverFast version to work on my neglected #Windows installation (and finally giving up), I thought I’d give it a try on my #Debian setup. Opened #Skanlite and … simply scanned the negatives. It just worked:

Scanned as TIFs and edited in #Darktable.

  3. Oh! And I just found out that the camera actually produces images—which is a handy thing for a camera to do. 😁

I just developed the #OptikOldschool #OptiMono100 in Rodinal 1+50 for 13:50 (@22°C, could have been a bit longer) and fixed it with Adofix 1+7.

Here are a few quick inverted smartphone snaps of the film, hanging in the shower.

  4. A few years back, the latest #3dPrinting craze was bottle openers with an integrated coin as a hard “lip” to lift the cap off a bottle.

Since the #Canon #TopShot winds the film all the way back in when it’s full, I thought I might use this concept to design and 3D-print a film canister opener.

It’s bulkier than it needs to be, and the tolerances still need a bit of tweaking. But yeah, it works.

  5. Notice to all bornhack people

I will be running a film development workshop at bornhack. Open to absolute beginners: learn how to develop film at home (in a field)

All materials provided, you just need to bring your 35mm camera to bornhack.

Spaces are limited so get in touch with me ahead of time to confirm a space and get some film to shoot before the workshop.

  6. An experiment: I found some new old wiper blades for my old car in the garage, and they don't fit my new one. So I'm trying to upcycle them into film squeegees.

  7. Three Days

I have worked in the office three times this week. I am supposed to average twice a week. Two weeks ago I only made it in once. This week I went three times to make up for it.

    Three days……

Damn, that was a lot. Remember the old days when I worked five days in the office? How the hell did I do that? Three days… it feels like a lifetime.

One more work day left this week and I am going to work from home. Insert the sound of a really emphatic sigh of relief right here.

Change of subject. On Sunday I dropped seven rolls of film in the mail. On Wednesday (yesterday) I got the notification saying that they had arrived at the Darkroom Lab. It is now a quarter to nine on Thursday evening. No scanned images yet. Fingers crossed I don’t have to wait too long. I wanna see how shitty my shitty photos look. I’m ready.

I’m ready for the weekend. Are you ready? I’m ready.

  8. I've wanted to learn #Rust for quite a while now, but my previous attempts always fizzled out after a while—perhaps due to the lack of a real goal.

A simple TUI #filmDevelopment timer app might be a nice project. The basics (time/interval/countdown) seem quite simple, but it could be further enhanced with timers for stop/fix/wash, save/load custom presets, and a nice menu. 🤔

  9. Hahaaa! Success! 🥳

#AgfaPhotoAPX100 developed in #Rodinal 1+50 for 10 minutes at 20°C, agitation (swirling) for the first minute, then 10 seconds every minute. Fixed in #Adofix 1+4 for four minutes.

Shot on my #YashicaFX3Super2000 with the ML 50mm f1.9 and a yellow filter. 🤓

  10. For now, I've opted to modify the reel from the original model to implement the 'film feeding mechanism' I had in mind. It works pretty well. (Test film of course, hence the long leader.)

  11. We've got pictures! 😁

Now, a thorough washing and drying. I guess scanning will have to wait for tomorrow, but let's see how quickly it will dry.

  12. • Pilot season is no longer a reliable window.
    • Casting happens all year.
    • Streamers order full seasons, not pilots.
    • Post‑strike production favors flexibility and speed.
    • Casting windows are shorter than ever.
    • Development tracking is now essential.
    • Breakdowns are the last step, not the first.
    • Actors who monitor series orders and production starts stay ahead.

  13. Reuse the developer or not? FX-39II diluted to 1+19 is a one-shot developer, but there's 30ml of the stuff in there, and I just hate seeing it go to waste. But I'm not really brave enough to push my luck. 😅

  15. As it is somewhat of a tradition now, I messed up developing yet again, this time with a combination of my old mistakes. But I still got _something_, which is still better than nothing. Not all that visible in the photo, but there's also a lot of transparency near the sprocket holes, which I had noticed while scanning my previous roll, but thought it was a problem with my scanning setup
Next time I'll get it down

  16. Second time developing film, everything went much smoother than the first time
The film itself does not look damaged and the chemicals which I thought were ruined worked like a charm, the summer temperatures seemingly were properly accounted for
Had to rip open the canister again, because either I still don't know how to operate the film extractor or it is just broken

  17. Giddy

Look at the nerd boy being all giddy.

The film lab sent him an email saying the received my latest film order. We’re going to have new film shots to play with at some point over the next couple of business days.

    Squee, bro… squee.

  18. First time developing film. Going from "I've fucked this up..." to actually seeing the negatives felt great
Also, a question if anyone actually sees this, did I ruin the fixer by not rinsing out the developer beforehand?
