I will be running a film development workshop at bornhack. Open to absolute beginners: learn how to develop film at home (in a field)

All materials provided, you just need to bring your 35mm camera to bornhack.

Spaces are limited so get in touch with me ahead of time to confirm a space and get some film to shoot before the workshop.

Three Days

I have worked in the office three times this week. I am supposed to average twice a week. Two weeks ago I only made it in once. This week I went three times to make up for it.

Three days……

Damn, that was a lot. Remember the old days when I worked five days in the office? How the hell did I do that? Three days… it feels like a lifetime.

One more work day left this week and I am going to work from home. Insert the sound of a really emphatic sigh of relief right here.

Change of subject. On Sunday I dropped seven rolls of film in the mail. On Wednesday (yesterday) I got the notification saying that they had arrived at the Darkroom Lab. It is now a quarter to nine on Thursday evening. No scanned images yet. Fingers crossed I don’t have to wait too long. I wanna see how shitty my shitty photos look. I’m ready.

I’m ready for the weekend. Are you ready? I’m ready.

I've wanted to learn #Rust for quite a while now, but my previous attempts always fizzled out after a while—perhaps due to the lack of a real goal.

A simple TUI #filmDevelopment timer app might be a nice project. The basics (time/interval/countdown) seem quite simple, but it could be further enhanced with timers for stop/fix/wash, save/load custom presets, and a nice menu. 🤔

#AgfaPhotoAPX100 developed in #Rodinal 1+50 for 10 minutes at 20°C, agitation (swirling) for the first minute, then 10 seconds every minute. Fixed in #Adofix 1+4 for four minutes.

Shot on my #YashicaFX3Super2000 with the ML 50mm f1.9 and a yellow filter. 🤓

For now, I've opted to modify the reel from the original model to implement the 'film feeding mechanism' I had in mind. It works pretty well. (Test film of course, hence the long leader.)

Reuse the developer or not? FX-39II diluted to 1+19 is a one-shot developer, but there's 30ml of the stuff in there, and I just hate seeing it go to waste. But I'm not really brave enough to push my luck. 😅

As it is somewhat of a tradition now, I messed up developing yet again, this time with a combination of my old mistakes. But I still got _something_, which is still better than nothing. Not all that visible in the photo, but there's also a lot of transparency near the sprocket holes, which I had noticed while scanning my previous roll, but thought it was a problem with my scanning setup
Next time I'll get it down

Second time developing film, everything went much smoother than the first time
The film itself does not look damaged and the chemicals which I thought were ruined worked like a charm, the summer temperatures seemingly were properly accounted for
Had to rip open the canister again, because either I still don't know how to operate the film extractor or it is just broken

You don't need a darkroom, just a lightproof changing bag for loading the film into the development tank. After developing, you can scan the negatives either with a negative scanner or a digital camera with a good macro light.

For black and white, you'll need:

On Friday, I'm going to an experimental #CreativeWorkshop to learn alternative ways of developing #AnalogueFilm using #indigo & other #PlantBased materials.

Kemi Craig is a woman of African descent who grew up in South Carolina where indigo is of historical significance for #BlackCultures. As an #artist working in analogue film, which has also deeply affected ideas of Blackness across cultural spectrums, Kemi is interested in exploring relationships between #ImageMaking & indigo. In unpacking parallel practices & #cultural relationships to indigo & film, Craig has invited Joshua Ngenda from #FluxMedia to collaborate. Trudi Lynn Smith will generously share her extensive #FilmDevelopment experience & #PlantKnowledge with participants.

Is there a trick to opening Lomography casettes?

Tomorrow I get to do something fun: I get to lick the science!

My last bottle of DD-X developer expired (quite spectacularly, I had to get a hacksaw to open it and add it to the disposal container), but I've got ONE roll of film left to process.

• Instant coffee
• Ascorbic acid powder (vitamin C)
• Washing soda (sodium carbonate)

Two of those, are lickable. That's the delta recipe for #caffenol, although I'm using it for HP5+ not Delta, it's still effective. I could've gone with Caffenol-C-H instead but that needs potassium bromide which can't be delivered as quickly and I'm not a patient person (hah!)
