  1. i highly recommend La sociedad de la nieve (Society of the Snow) (2023) if you like wilderness survival films or are interested in the Andes planecrash. i really liked the focus this film had on the horrific and sublime experiences of day-to-day rather than drama between the group like Alive (1993). there are also really beautiful moments where they're grappling with making meaning of this experience. overall very touching, and it's cool to see cameos from many of the survivors in the film

  6. I'm gonna lean into my feelings and #DecRec this article that has been stuck in my mind since I first read it in what... 2021? I probably reread it once a year.

"The Toxoplasma of Rage" is an article written by a psychologist in 2014 about how (or why?) the media has become so darn good at making people argue and being nasty with each other about the most unproductive topics, rendering people incapable of reaching reasonable agreements, thereby benefiting the corporations where this discourse happens.

The article uses various examples related to activism, from PETA, to police brutality, to Tumblr's social justice efforts.

Gonna share a quote that stuck with me: "It’s in activists’ interests to destroy their own causes by focusing on the most controversial cases and principles, the ones that muddy the waters and make people oppose them out of spite. And it’s in the media’s interest to help them and egg them on.."

  10. #DecRec IDK, maybe everyone knows this nowadays, but when I learned it, it felt revelatory, so in case there are still people who don't know this one:

The inside-out burrito method of putting on a duvet cover:

    Turn duvet cover inside out

    Lay duvet on top

    Fasten corners (if applicable)

Roll both together from end opposite end as zipper.

Pull the zipper ends around the package and zip.

    Grab and unroll:

  14. #Decrec I guess? But if waking up is rough in the winter, try getting one of those plug-in timers for making it look like you're home when you aren't and plugging a lamp into it. I recently finally set up my clockwork timer to turn my lamp on about an hour before I wanted to wake up, and I've been waking up more or less painlessly for a week.

    Magic!

  18. Easy’s neighborhood is full of people who know him, who know each other. Calling greetings, watching out for each other, and for each other’s trees. (Watch it and you’ll understand. 😭) It’s a fully imagined, lovingly known, and gorgeously lit and filmed world.

Don Cheadle is also a hilarious gem, as a very good friend to have, but preferably at a long distance!

“Devil in a Blue Dress” is a smart, pitch-perfect #noir! That’s my #DecRec for today!

  31. Today I would recommend
    Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut.

I have PTSD, and this book basically describes the condition. I know it is scifi and supposed to be time travel, but to me, it is essence of condition.

  36. Today I'm recommending
    Binti by Nnedi Okorafor

A Scifi serial with protagonist from minority. I know the main character doesn't represents me, but it was such a relief to read a book with non-white female protagonist.

  44. Today I would recommend Machinehood by S.B. Divya

This is a scifi book that talks about very possible future, very nicely written.
I have to say that lately I found works of diverse authors to be more interesting, easier read and more realistic.

  47. Today I will recommend
The Bicentennial Man by Isaac Asimov
It is story about robot who had to die to be accepted by humans. It resonated with me because some humans face that every day. They can be accepted by some only as a memory or abstraction, not in reality.
BTW. Be careful when you read Asimov, he wrote those stories long time ago and it shows.
