The Ministry of Culture was delighted when it persuaded a dance troupe from the restless Yue minority to perform at the emperor’s birthday celebrations—but they were vigilant, stopping a man with a decorative #dagger. He laughed & showed them that it was really just a fan & had no sharp edge.

Perhaps, then, they should have been prepared when the fans in the Yue folk dance turned out to be knives. The emperor & his consort did escape with their lives, but only just.
