What's happening? Well it's getting a little awkward up here, air thick with spores as the #Cycad boys have recovered and are getting their frisky second wind for the season.

Some are twice as excited as others.

The Kraken awakes. The big cycad didn’t make any leaves last year so I’m wondering if it’s been saving up to make some cones in this its 30th year. Any individual cycad plant only makes either male or female cones, so if it does turn out to be cones, I’m throwing it a gender (self)-reveal party.

from the news item after examining the 80 million years old fossil they concluded
“...the external morphology of this pollen cone is different from living cycads today. This finding suggests cycads aren't really 'living fossils' and they probably have a more dynamic evolutionary history than previously thought."..
