  7. CW: Politics, deaths of incarcerated people, mass incarceration in the US

Ken Mills, the architect of the plan that turned the Cuyahoga County Jail into an ongoing human rights atrocity, has had his conviction overturned.

The appeals court ruled that the string of nine deaths he was ultimately responsible for were not admissible as evidence in the charges that were brought against him. This is bullshit. One of the charges brought against him was falsifying records. What records did he tamper with? Records about the conditions that lead to nine deaths.

The basic system he set up has not changed. We are now having another wave of deaths---five this year. And this is just one local, extreme example of the brutality of the system of mass incarceration we see across the United States.

  9. CW: CW: Deaths of incarcerated people

There have been three more deaths at the #CuyahogaCountyJail. That makes five this year. Like most people in the jail, these people had not been convicted of any crimes---they are being held pre-trial, mostly because they couldn't afford bail, although in one of these cases, the person died before the judge even had the chance to set bail. Another person had a parole violation, which is the other primary reason people wind up in the jail. It's a reminder that once you are sucked into the system of mass incarceration, you are almost never really free. You are subject to lifelong surveillance and discrimination.

The jail is a death trap. Five people are dead this year. There were eight in 2018. The intervening years have generally seen one or two deaths a year. No one should die in custody. When the government takes people's freedom away, it takes on the responsibility of keeping them safe. This is especially true of people who are still presumed innocent.
